Goodbye to Language Reviews

Adieu au langage, a film that may dazzle many and irritate others, but will leave no one feeling indifferent. [Full review in Spanish]

| Original Score: 4/5 | Apr 12, 2023

These movies can be expansive, but they are also exhausting. But for 70 minutes, it's a hell of a lot of fun to play in.

| Jun 22, 2019

It's a really funny film as well, with plenty of cheeky jokes thrown around.

| Jun 13, 2019

Less of a narrative or a thesis than an esoteric patchwork visual essay condemning our fallen society, it's intent on being as abrasive as possible in almost every way.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Apr 3, 2019

[Jean-Luc] Godard doesn't ridicule us for our obsession with animals, but shows us why we love them. If Roxie [Godard's dog] trusts Godard, we feel like we should too.

| Mar 9, 2019

GOODBYE TO LANGUAGE is a sensory overload of both sight and sound.

| Original Score: B | Dec 8, 2018

Evenly distributed throughout Adieu's duration, Godard inserts one coup de cinéma after another...

| Nov 18, 2017

Filming in 3-D, Godard forces a reconsideration not only of his own films but of all films.

| Aug 21, 2017

A particularly painful scene featuring a loud scratchy quill on loud scratchy parchment made my hair and teeth feel very very loose. I think that's what J.L.G wanted, though.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Mar 10, 2017

Language is gone. The new cinema has arrived.

| Jun 6, 2016

The 3-D aside, there is nothing in "Language" that has not been done before and done better.

| Original Score: 1.0 | May 19, 2016

The film offers a resounding experience for anyone remotely interested in the way we watch movies.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Apr 6, 2016

Working in 3-D for the first time, Mr. Godard pushes the envelope and - depending how you look at it - trolls the format for all its worth.

| Oct 8, 2015

A hugely entertaining and almost entirely inscrutable lark, with a punk rock air of both surrender and rejuvenation.

| May 12, 2015

Put in short, the film is chaos, but glorious, wondrous chaos that lets us see what genius looks like from the inside.

| Original Score: 9.1/10 | Mar 19, 2015

I'm attaching four stars more out of helplessness than critical acumen, by the way; if the film is beyond language, it's certainly beyond a traditional rating system.

| Original Score: 4/4 | Mar 19, 2015

Throughout this enigmatic film's short running time, I couldn't for the life of me make out what Godard was trying to say.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Mar 19, 2015

..we keep going back to Roxy and, astoundingly, Godard just about succeeds in allowing us to see the world through the dog's eyes, the implication being that it is the purer form of experience.

| Original Score: B | Mar 11, 2015

If this kind of synaptic brainstorm sounds like an invigorating cinematic experience, I'm here to tell you that watching Goodbye to Language on a big screen will be 70 minutes well spent.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Feb 5, 2015

A film that's stuffed with language, its title notwithstanding.
