After Midnight Reviews

Apr 1, 2025

After Dark wasn't too bad, but it had the potential to be much better. This really was more of a drama with the odd horror scene, mostly focusing on the relationship between two of the main characters, which was well portrayed with solid acting from the cast. It was a decent watch and the short run time meant it didn't drag on.

The changes for the new season are all for the worse. More Taylor Tomlinson, more talking, less fun and games with the guests. I don't need another late night monologue and more inane conversation. Not all the bits are going to hit, so keep them short and simple and focused on the guests and social media. An advantage of not watching live is I can skip the stuff that is slowly going nowhere.

This movie was so close to good, but ultimately failed at even being decent. The idea was good, the story was interesting, the acting/casting was perfect. But somehow it failed at being a compelling drama and being horror. --- Nearly half of it seemed like it was silent flashbacks to their beautiful, budding relationship. One or two makes sense, but there were so many I started fast forwarding by 5secs to skip through. --- The reveal of her mysterious disappearance was dull, and took entirely too long for a dull conversation. It should have been an interesting look at human connection, and what it means to both want more and want what you have. It was a boring look at human boredom. --- His interactions with his friends were entertaining, and the last five minutes were hilarious. If they used more comedy to drive the point of the drama it would've been fantastic. Instead of was serious drama juxtaposed to silly horror. --- Would not recommend, unless you want to just watch the last five minutes.

Much like his other film, The Battery, writer/director Jeremy Gardner makes a monster movie where the monster is a backdrop to a more compelling tale of the human condition. Most diehard horror fans will turn their nose up at this, but that's their loss. Id give this film 3 stars for the cinematography alone. i love how an indie filmmaker can capture all these visually beautiful scenes in the dark, while major motion pictures struggle with simple visibility in dark scenes. All in all, After Midnight is a home run for me. The story, the characters, the dialogue, the cinematography, the score, all wonderfully done. This film is a great example of when a bunch of people get together to make a good movie and they really care about their work and craft.

I'm going to give my spoiler early: THE ALIEN IS REAL !! My 3 stars go for Gardner's respectful handling of drama and Zebrowski's smooth navigation of occasional comed while in my opinion Brea Grant could have smiled a fair bit less during the back and forth telling of Gardner's recollections, in this otherwise strange montage of a long term love story/alien movie. The progression can be frustrating for some and I had to struggle stretching the narrative to aliens...or was it stretching the aliens to the love story? All an all not a bad chick flix with an alien angle. You are just left on your own to make the connection....qand oh...did I say THE ALIEN IS REAL?

It start good and suspenseful, but the last 30 minutes is super boring, and the ending sucks and will anger horror fans. If you're a hardcore horror fan, don't watch this movie because you will feel robbed.

This movie is just bad. The acting is awful and the characters suck. If you don't smoke weed watching this, it is so boring you kinda nod off. Just bad!

God even bad movies suck now …

A likable indie with an unlikable protagonist. The dialog and acting moments are solid in this simple story, the monologs are noteworthy. If this movie was in the short story format, part of an anthology, Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, etc the execution would have been tighter with less rethreading of themes.

Bruh this movie was garbo, if you like lame slow romance movies with monsters and fake scares as metaphors to dumb peoples self-inflicted relationship problems then you might like this otherwise definitely not a horror and definitely not engaging and I usually like Benson and Moorhead

Not really scary if you're a serious horror fan like myself, but sooo clever and fun. Loved it!

Jeremy Gardner's script and performance both have a undeniably "Florida Man," cheekiness, which work to excellent effect. As much an exploration of love and romance as a creature feature, it works surprisingly well as both. Characters are well developed and distinct, the film is well-made, and what's real and what may (or not) be imagined are kept credibly ambiguous until finally revealed in a tremendous, evolving ending that at first had me thinking the script had thoroughly lost its way until, it suddenly...changed. A lot of fun for horror fans that could work just as well as a date movie.

This movie is fun and unique.

"After Midnight" is a cohesive mashup of different genres: comedy, drama, romance and horror (monster feature). The movie depicts an imperfect relationship and a character struggling to overcome the departure of his lover. The monster is perhaps a metaphor for the heartbreak. A reasonable horror movie and a much better love story.

Boring. Poorly made. Goes nowhere. I was waiting for anything remotely interesting to happen until near the end of the movie. I paused it and saw that the movie was almost over, and shut it off. No matter how good the end is, it's not worth a mind numbingly boring and badly made first 90% of the runtime.

Spoiler-ish Alert. Great movie. Much more of a meditation on a particular romantic relationship than it is a horror movie, but that unexpectedness and the solid acting and interspersed humor makes this a must watch indie.

If you go expecting a creature feature, and are allergic to emotions, you won't like this flick. This is a coming of age movie for a 30 year old, like High Fidelity but with a monster acting as a metaphor for our protagonist's self-sabotage. He recalls an idealized version of his relationship while his girlfriend is missing, details are scarce, and his fragile mental state teeters on the edge of oblivion. That is, until she comes back. Turns out, relationships require work and involve more than just fantasy. Hard decisions must be made. And there's still that thing about the monster...ehh...probably needs to be dealt with. My wife and I loved the jump scare towards the end. Masterful.

What is our brave hero's plan? Go after her or at least call her on the cell phone she should have had, since it's 2019 not 1989. NOPE! His plan is lock up his house and shoot at passing cars, because he thinks the obvious mutated animal can drive. Hank, "I didn't nothing and couldn't find." Plus, I'm guessing mutated animal since it takes the ENTIRE movie before it actually shows itself. Instead of learning what it is or how it got there. We rather watch Hank talking to himself and shoot at stranger. Not it's bad enough when the monster doesn't show itself until the last five minutes when the movie's runtime is 65 or 85 minutes. But 83 minutes of 99% of nothing. I really don't do one man shows for exactly this reason, THEY ARE BORING!

The filmmakers did what they could with what they had, but ultimately their vision doesn't overcome their limitations.

Always curious about a movie that has a high critic score and low audience score (or visa versa). It feels like a monster movie that was never intended to be scary. The relationship is the background element, the B plot, at least in the beginning, but about half way through it shifts and you get these very long winded conversations and interpersonal moments. It's like the director wanted to make you forget it was a monster movie so he could get one good surprise jump in during the last few minutes. It's not a bad story but if you're looking for horror or scary this ain't it.
