Alex of Venice Reviews

Aug 24, 2023

Mary Elizabeth Winstead should earn a prize for her performance in this movie, the worst ever actress to play in a movie while pretending she was good.

The film enjoyment hinges on how much you like its actress. I love her, so I liked it a lot.

Mike D'Angelo ("The A.V. Club"): "So doggedly ordinary that it constantly teeters on the edge of tedium." "A character study without character." (Mauro Lanari)

Some self-discoveries come looking for you! Not to be confused with Venice in the title as the Europe's own Venice. It's a place in Los Agenles, USA. I don't know it is to be called a B movie or an indie, but definitely a decent drama with a decent storyline and cast. Indeed, it was about Alex, a middle age working and married woman with a young son. Her husband who takes care of the household, is now deserted them. So in her busy working life, Alex comes to realise the family bonding, particularly with her son. Then there's her dad and sister who are a troublemaker than any useful. So her life with a new perspective begins, like a self-discovery. This is a directional debut for a supporting actor. He should be directing more films. I really liked it. It was simple and obviously realistic. This thing happens in the real world. So all I felt it was a reflection of someone's real life on the screen. Well written and directed. I liked the cast too. Mary Elizabeth was very good and so the rest of them. This is not an unexpected film, but with its limits it had narrated a fine story. The ratings are not fair. It's surely worth a watch and better than an average. I think only the adult would recognise it from its contents with similar experiences of their own lives. 7/10

It started off interesting, but slowly just becomes boring Mary E. does a great job and is a standout. This could have been great, but the plot with its subplots just did not workout well by the end.

Elizabeth Winstead's performance is the highlight of this sentimental drama. Although it's slow, there's a credibility to the story that makes it easy to enjoy the little moments.

Good perfomance from Elizabeth Winstead. She is just fun to watch and makes the viewer root for her character. There are some cliches and stereotypes but what is great that nobody is a villain in the story. Both George and Venice have their own reasons for break up. There are some good jokes over all movie is positive.

I hardly liked any of the characters in this movie. As well acted as it was, I just couldn't get over how bad the story was. The character of Alex is not only an emotional wreck, but she is probably the worst lawyer ever portrayed on film. I can safely say that I will not watch this again.

Maybe after reading the plot you think this is like countless other films. Once you see it, it's impossible not enjoy all its redeeming qualities. You start to feel a human connection to Alex's life and can't stop admiring her for all the things she has done. Winstead plays a very relatable character with precision that solidifies the movie and makes her one of my favorite actresses of the 21st century.

Great story and acting, one of the usual VOD films that deserved greater recognition. I am forever baffled why audiences give these art house films bad reviews, they are storytelling films with depth and interesting characters. This a slow and beautiful journey that rewards the viewer with something that mainstream films avoid.

Chris Messina is starting to become a force to be reckoned with. Though he has been a star of indie faire for the past ten years or so, he broke out in the Hulu (formerly Fox) show "The Mindy Project." In this indie film he is both the director and a bit player in a story of a young woman beginning again while still at the start of her life. Though it is a film we have all seen before, it is flavored by Messina's domineering presence, just off-screen. Read more at http://www.bluefairyblog.com/reviews/2015/10/1/alex-of-venice

A well-observed slice-of-life film. It's beautifully shot and well-acted. Overall, a very well-done film about hardships in life and parenthood.

yeah.this movie was average, mediocre at best...Chris Messina is a very limited actor and to see him behind cameras as a director, well, the result is not so far from his acting skills, however the actors involved in this project are really good and execute their performances with a lot of professionalism.I have to add,the last 20 min I could not watch,no...really,I literally couldn't.fell asleep.sorry.

Featuring another standout performance from Mary Elizabeth Winstead, #alexofvenice is an affecting portrait of life in the midst of a divorce. Chris Messina proves he can handle directing a small intimate story, I'd like to see what he could do with more.

I think that what Alex of Venice brings to the table is its particular tone, a sense of middle-of-the-road, relaxing realism that successfully sucks in the viewer in a similar manner to like minded films such as Bella, Room, The One I Love, Like Crazy and other films that mark the best of the indie genre. Alex of Venice and these other films, to some degree, ride an ambiguous tone emotionally and aesthetically. Unlike the washed out grey of Inside Llewyn Davis, the endless artistry of Knight of Cups or the pretentious dribble of Clouds of Sils Maria, Alex of Venice is earnest and minimalist, looking to allow its actors to interact naturally and capture what goes on from there. It doesn't devolve into unnecessary "artistic" shots and the runtime is perfect for the subject matter. Although the storyline is extremely unoriginal and fairly predictable, Alex of Venice chooses to work from a well worn base in order to strive instead for quality and a steady realism centered around a really fantastic performance by Mary Elizabeth Winstead and a capable supporting cast. It isn't the greatest film ever but you get the feeling that Messina and crew know that. Alex of Venice takes itself just as seriously as it should and the results leave you feeling a rather pleasant mix of thoughtfulness and relaxation. And in the end, Alex walks off not with a man but with her child, the best exit one can ask for in today's day and age. I look forward to what Messina has in store for us next.

Understated and quietly charming.

Agradável, ocasionalmente tocando, sem nunca ser realmente convincente.

I think many can relate with today's society where, can i say, most relationships aren't as solid as they where in the past. The struggles of what Alex is going through, are like bits of here and there of what people can go through without having all these problem at the same time. This movie is a slow pace one, where emotions and thoughts are messing around.

Alex of Venice is a little too short, but still makes the most of itself with a timely message and solid work from it's talented cast.
