Critics Consensus

Alien³ takes admirable risks with franchise mythology, but far too few pay off in a thinly scripted sequel whose stylish visuals aren't enough to enliven a lack of genuine thrills.

Kathleen Carroll New York Daily News One assumes that Weaver received enough combat pay to compensate for playing the now understandably cynical Ripley in this bleak and pointlessly grueling movie. Rated: 1/4 Aug 6, 2024 Full Review Michael Wilmington Los Angeles Times It does succeed in rounding the three movies off, not smashingly but interestingly. It drives us into the wall, throws Ripley into a blind alley from which, at last, there is no escape hatch. Aug 6, 2024 Full Review Jay Carr Boston Globe The monsters just aren't that scary anymore, and so the film mostly just sits there, gloomy and inert, sunk in exhausted myth, looking and sounding Wagnerian but feeling underpowered. Aug 6, 2024 Full Review Casey Chong Casey's Movie Mania [Alien 3] just doesn’t have the same tension and visceral impact that the first two movies did so well. Rated: 2.5/5 Aug 15, 2024 Full Review Robbie Roberts News & Observer (Raleigh, NC) The movie folds back upon its previous incarnations again and again, never attempting to advance its twice-told tale, content merely to retell once more. What's on screen seems aimed more at making money than making myth. Rated: 2/4 Aug 6, 2024 Full Review Eleanor O'Sullivan Asbury Park Press (NJ) It is dark, cramped, sweaty; Ripley does struggle with external and internal "monsters." But the movie is capable of cheering you, too, for its intelligence, its lack of superficial, groundless flash and for its spare, appropriate use of violence. Josh A After you finish watching the original trilogy, you might feel bad for Ripley. I do at least. Basically the entire trilogy takes place over a few months for her, and both Aliens and this film over a few days, as she immediately goes from Aliens to Alien 3 with no break. The trilogy is a great and epic story, sure, but you can feel her pain in this movie. Let's get into it. The story is that after Aliens, Ripley and Newt's ship crashed on a prison planet. Newt also died, which wasn't the best choice and a flaw of the film, but it is what it is. Meanwhile, an alien bursts from a dog's chest and just like that, we have Ripley and prisoners vs. a Xenomorph. It's similar to the plot of the last two, but also Ripley has an alien inside her, an interesting idea that raises the stakes. It also leads to Ripley's death. Yep, she dies in this one, so this is basically the finale to the series. It's second to last in the timeline, anyways, so this is 100% the finale to Ripley's character. And it works, as she dives into a furnace while an alien bursts out of her chest. It just feels nice and wraps up the trilogy in a nice, neat bow. Because that's what this movie is: a movie to wrap up the story. Also the aesthetic is cool, being orange-green and feeling dirty, as it's a prison planet. Just a pretty good film in general. Overall, a solid finale to Ellen Ripley's character and an underrated Alien movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/21/25 Full Review Audience Member Perfect ending to tie up all the loose ends in 1 and 3 I honestly don't get why people hate it so much. I loved the genetic testing scenes. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/15/25 Full Review Gabe R "Ailen 3" isn't the greatest sequal, but it also isn't as bad as they say. The Cgi may be funky at times, and the story isn't great but the acting is well put together and there are tons of great moments and gore in this movie Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/11/25 Full Review Aaron E The Theatrical Version leaves much to be desired, with a frustratingly hard-to-watch execution and disappointing character elements. However, the Assembly Cut offers a significantly improved experience, featuring a different xenomorph origin. Unfortunately, even with these improvements, the film as a whole remains the weakest entry in the franchise. Hardcore fans may find value in the Assembly Cut, but casual viewers should steer clear and opt for any other installment in the series. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/01/25 Full Review Jordan S If you can, watch the extended cut. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/29/25 Full Review Paul S They took everything that made Aliens great and completely removed it from the equation. It had a lot of great visuals, but the story was horrible, and it made no sense. You can definitely skip this one to get the best Alien franchise experience.
