An American Werewolf in London Reviews
An absolute timeless classic of a movie. Simply stunning and superb. Jenny Agutter is a national treasure
This is, quite simply, the best werewolf movie ever made. It strikes a perfect balance between being scary and funny, the lead character is remarkably likable, and the effects are mesmerizing. The makeup and visuals were groundbreaking in 1981, and they continue to look more realistic than much of today's CGI. The first lycanthropic transformation is absolutely gut-wrenching. My only criticism of the film is the ending, which feels abrupt.
One of the best combination.of comedy and horror ever made. Very gory and terrifying but strangely comedic at the same time. Great acting. Terrific plot and direction.
Movie is perfectly executed with masterful practical effects and make-up by Rick Baker.
Saw it on Betamax video years ago and never seen anything like it since. A true classic and one of my favourite movies of all time.
Filme bacaninha, o roteiro é mais ou menos, o terror é bom e o sangue utilizado no filme é bacana, mas a história e os personagens não ajudam a melhorar o filme.
Well, even though it was released in 1981, and I took this into account while watching, it sure was a lot of hokey bananas with some cornball thrown in. Good song choices though! And some very good special effects and make up for its era! (Rick Baker). "An American naked man stole my balloons" was a great funny line though! Cast as: little boy with balloons in the credits! This little guy was a saving grace! I remember it being much better when I watched originally but wow, that was like some 40 yrs ago about! The best I can give this as it stands in 2025 is about 6 out of 10. Thanks to that balloon kid!
Loved it! It's scary and funny. Very entertaining movie.
It's definitely in my top 5 of werewolf movies. It's atmosphere is top notch. Transformation scene is awesome and the ending is really good with the werewolf out on the loose. This one doesn't disappoint.
The greatest werewolf film of all time. Nothing else needs be said.
As an option to see on Halloween, the film remains as a half-fulfilled promise. It's not that the film is bad, but that at times it doesn't decide between causing horror or laughing. The highlight: the stunning makeup.
One of the best transformations in a horror movie by the GOAT special effects artist Rick Baker. Top 10 favorite horror movie of mine and the werewolf look is amazing. Credence ClearWater Revival song of Bad Moon Rising and the Marcels Blue Moon fits so perfect. Amazing practical effects. Mixture of horror and humor . Great cast. Still can't believe the financers wanted Dan Aykroyd as Jack and John Belushi as David. 10/10 EPIC FANTASTIC horror movie , the best werewolf movie .
In this classic cult horror comedy, two American college students are backpacking through England when they are attacked on the moors one evening by a wolf. The survivor, David, is brought to a London hospital to recover, and is visited by his dead friend who warns him he will become a werewolf at the next full moon. He begins a romance with his nurse, Alex, who isn’t sure whether he is crazy, but she decides to start up a romance and bring him home to her flat anyway. During the full moon when David transforms into a werewolf (a great scene) and wreaks havoc in Central London, Alex pleads with David to come back to her as she loves him, you can’t help but think - surely, there must be an easier way to meet a man in London.
Amazing makeup, great story and characters. But this movie just has too little scary and action-packed scenes, there could be so much more of the werewolf or the undead… also, it ends way too abruptly.
An American turns into a werewolf in London and thats the story, but what I didn't expect is how much of a dark comedy it would be.
🍅 10/10 Not much movies scare me, but for some reason I cant handle werewolves so 😓. Perhaps one of the best cold opens to a movie ever. I didn’t expect this to be just as much as a comedy as it is horror, but I’m here for it. Just a great movie definitely recommend.
I remember seeing this film in a theater in 1981-2 with my brother and a friend. We were in our early 20's. The film's use of humor juxtaposed with horror was offputting and wildly disturbing. It was really unusual for the time. At one point both of my companions begged me to leave. I still make fun of my brother about it. I recently rewatched it and it holds up well enough given so many shows and movies have been done this way since.
One of my absolutely all-time favorite werewolf movies!!
This movie is so good it made me a werewolf.
