America's Sweethearts Reviews

Feb 26, 2025

All the stars in the cinematic universe can't save this pos movie. Big budget, small returns. Avoid.

Classic romcom elevated by a stellar cast who looked like they were enjoying themselves. Feel good

I would've hoped a film like this with quite the all-star cast would've been better than it turned out to be but I found America's Sweethearts to be a bland romcom. Yes, not every film about Hollywood is going to be Notting Hill but I was expecting something better than this cliché storm. To the movie's credit, Billy Crystal does get some good lines in (the fact that he wrote the script back in the '90s is not lost on me), Julia Roberts is likeable in the lead role and, naturally, Christopher Walken was the best part of the film (too bad he and Roberts never interact with each other, not even in deleted scenes) but overall, this film wasn't very funny or compelling. Shame we never saw more clips from those fake movies after the prologue. Those could've been fun. At least do a better job of selling the idea that John Cusack and Catherine Zeta-Jones were once in love with each other, instead of the more biased depiction so that the audience will feel comfortable with the film shipping the former off with Roberts. I don't know what to say, man, I'm grasping at straws to actually write a review about this film that says something more sufficient than "bland and blander" and "go watch the thematically similar (on a surface level) Notting Hill instead".

I thought this movie was absolutely hilarious. Amazing group of actors. The cast was beyond awesome Christopher Walken Alan arkin, John cusack, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Julia Roberts, Billy Crystal and Seth green. Hank azaria was definitely one of the best parts of the movie. The storyline was original which is something really rare in Hollywood these days. Back when Hollywood had an imagination. Now it's all remakes & sequels. I think it was so awesome that even Larry King had a cameo in the movie. Larry King was surprisingly funny. Who knew? I think Julia Roberts & John Cusack had amazing chemistry. I like that the movie was politically incorrect that was the best part of it. Especially in this PC world we live in now. I would highly recommend this movie. Especially if you want to see something different. And not more of the same stuff Hollywood usually churns out.

It’s cute, light hearted with fun moments. Hank Azaria steals the show, Alan Aron has some great lines. Billy Crystal and Seth Green are great. I watch it often.

Don't focus on ratings.its good comedy movie.

Fantastic cast in a mediocre romantic comedy. Catherine Zeta-Jones and John Cusack play actors and former husband and wife out doing a press junket. Julia Roberts and Billy Crystal also star and pretty rescue this from being a total disinteresting disaster. Hoped for better considering the cast.

The movie's title refers to a popular married Hollywood couple who are a big box office draw. Unfortunately, just when they have a new movie coming out, their private acrimonious split has become public, and film publicist Lee tries to reunite them, at least for show, for a press junket. Also involved in matters are the wife's sister and publicist, as well as Hector, the wife's lover. Of course their involvement complicates matters further. This might have been great as a screwball farce, but instead it is cute and sentimental, trying to make an unpleasant scenario "nice". It didn't work.

I honestly loved this movie! I was reminded of the Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston, Angelina Jolie love triangle and media fiasco with this movie.

I agree with the consensus on this one : you cannot have a good romcom without sympathetic characters. Also, the attempts at comedy are hard to watch.

I felt like the reason this was greenlit was the relatively intriguing premise of trying to hold a Hollywood A-list couple together rather than its actual screenplay, which was sorely missing on jokes and drama. Other than the inventive framing of the narrative the movie played into a dozen cliches, right down to casting one of Hollywood's most beautiful women as the homely second fiddle by simply putting her hair in a ponytail. Most of the acting was fine, though I think Azaria phoned in his silly accent as he's done better in other movies. They at least avoided the pitfalls of over-reliance on poop humor and the leading man's characterization didn't induce any hatred from me, making it a step above a lot of other rom-coms. Other than the premise this was very forgettable.

The characters are uninteresting and the film lacks charm (even though they have some charming actors).

This goes to show you that a movie that has horrible ratings is absolutely wonderful and entertaining. John Cusack and Katherine Zeta-Jones lead the cast and also starring are Billy Crystal, Christopher Walken, Julia Roberts, Hank Azaria, and Stanley Tucci. What a cast! Alan Arkin is great as Johns "herbal" therapist. It's an amazing cast with many classic comedy moments. I totally disagree with the rating, it is a movie you will watch over and over.

This movie is underrated. It's a witty satirical take on Hollywood. It's not hour run of the mill "regular romantic comedy."

Even though there's some ridicule around and towards the eponymous honesty of elegant realism, it unfolds nicely to further the satisfaction, with brief unexpectancy in the direction, while being sporadically funny and charming from its appealing cast. (B) (Full review TBD)

With such an all-star lineup, they should have been able to pull off this movie. Nope. The only thing I liked was seeing John Cusack.

"America's Sweethearts", released in 2001, is the story of a publicist's attempt to intervene and reconnect an estranged famous couple's relationship at the premiere of their final film together. The movie as a whole made me laugh out loud. It's such a parody of Hollywood and the politics and intricacies of it. It made me think about how contrived and deliberate the media can be and our perceptions of it and who people are. As a whole, the story was interesting. The dialogue was well-written, sharp, and witty. The acting was tremendous, especially that of Hank Azaria and Catherine Zeta-Jones who play the caricaturized and egocentric Hector and Gwen, respectively. To me, the directing was that of a standard romantic comedy. The shots moved through the typical wide shot to medium shot to close-up progression. There was no animation or VFX, however, the lighting and production value overall were great. To me, this romantic comedy was different from others of its genre in that it seemed to choose to poke fun at the romantic relationship dynamics and blow them out of proportion, rather than to turn the film into a mushy gushy easily predictable love story. This is evidenced in that Eddie and Gwen as the main characters do not end up together. In a twist of events, Eddie comes to fall in love with Gwen's sister Keke, and Gwen ends up alone - breaking up with her prior boyfriend Hector by the time the film ends.

I really don't get the bad reviews. CZJ is fantastic playing an egomaniacal narcissist. The movie is hilarious, touching, and sufficiently tongue-in-cheek to elicit non-stop laughs. I find it utterly charming and well put-together.

(5.0 out of 6 stars) When we see being in show business involves making every perspectives happy in what they see on and off the camera. When we see that we all have been captivated in what we see and hear about some people that we only want more and more when we know what we are seeing on and off the camera to see who we put in the spotlight. When we see that there is always a business in the what we want people to see when they like seeing things that we know we can turn a profit from. When many we see are involved in making those stars in the spotlight when we all want a piece of the show business pie that keeps us watching, imitating and drawn into the ups did downs that others live that we see ourselves as perfect or unperfect. When there is alot that goes in being swept into the spotlight thst we get into deeply we don't see away out or away back in when it goes wrong when our natural emotions clashes with the unnatural superficiality in what we want but can't have both. When we see that when we get into deep we see in the eyes of those who we once were, humble and unseen that we are able be ourselves and enjoy what's deep within us that made the world like us in the first place. When we see works of art that needs to be seen, show business is only in the hands if those whom can reveal a true spotlight that we don't see but others see that can reveal what we have been seeing all wrong. When we are in a business that makes others see right being all wrong but see we are being wrong in seeing right, we know we can't turn back in what others follow to only accept what others see and what we always could see all along the truth, or continue living a lie when we see some rides are over or just beginning depending on your perspective.
