Antiviral Reviews

This movie felt like it lasted eighty four fking years and none of them were enjoyable

Riveting slow burn dystopian sci-fi, the plot could have been more fleshed out as the overall gist wasn't always clear. Fans of the genre should enjoy it.

An unappreciated gem that really showed what Brandon Cronenberg was capable of from off the bat. I can see why this film wasn't more popular... it's pretty disgusting and probably comes across as an attempt to ride the coat-tails of Cronenberg sr, but it definitely rewards careful viewing. It's a very solid film in its own right with some truly uniquely horrifying ideas. The film presents one of the most disgusting dystopias ever committed to film and makes some of the most bleak commentary on the nature of celebrity since Being John Malkovich.

Brandon Cronenberg does not disappoint. Though Possessor and Infinity Pool are better, this film too is a trip. The man is a master of surrealism, not afraid to throw in dashes of hyperrealism as well. He can count me as a fan.

A unique movie, never seen anything like that. What a weird watch Antiviral was. Loved the acting and the plot. After the Pandemic this Cronenberg feels even more purposeful.

This is a slow burn of a movie, hard not to compare to his father's work (although it compares favourably). Avoid if you have any kind of aversion to needles. Good and moody. And just when you think it's going nowhere, it goes somewhere.

Enticing thriller from Cronenberg Jr. with intriguing themes about the future that have not been explored before. Worth a watch

Never seen anything like that before, a really good movie!

There is an amazing movie somewhere inside "Antiviral". The film is well-written, Caleb Landry Jones is an excellent actor, the universe is interesting and the minimalist production design fits perfectly with the premise. But unfortunately, even though he shows potential, Brandon Cronenberg's inexperience as a director is notable (this film is from 2012). The pace is very slow [slower than "Possessor" (2020), and like "Spectre", I caught myself constantly looking at the timestamp], the action moments are badly filmed, and I think Brandon has kind of a fetish for needles. He insists on needles' close-ups until it gets repetitive and no longer uncomfortable. The movie isn't scary or disturbing at all, it's not a horror film, it's more like a sci-fi psychological thriller. And the third act is not as tense as it should be, there's a moment that unintentionally made me laugh.

Liked the concept of this and it started fairly strongly. It started to lose me pretty quickly though when it started trying to be deeper than it really was. Felt a lot like someone trying to recreate Black Mirror but failing the execution and instead producing a frankly boring mess. This could have been great if it didn't try to take itself so seriously.

This is one of my absolute favorite movies. The artistry and cinematography is amazing and the premise is twisted but not unbelievable.

The literal consumption of celebrities (lab grown) is used to critique our real world obsession, worship, and consumption of celebrities. This critique would have been more impactful if I could even a little bit relate to the act of celebrity worship. The film lacks subtlety, as others have said; the story is spelled out to the viewer in rote fashion. As the film progresses, a story of corporate espionage unfolds, but is full of holes and fails to develop into anything terribly interesting. At least it was interesting enough for me to want watch through to the end. I feel like this lack of development constitutes a great missed opportunity. After watching, I mentioned to my partner that Antiviral reminded me of a modern Videodrome, a film 30 years its senior that does exactly what this film seems to have intended, except expertly executed rather than mediocrely. Lo and behold, the writer and director is David Cronenberg's son, Brandon. Seems he's got large shoes to fill. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention there's body horror in this. It gets the job done well enough.

Never (ever, ever) failing to shock, disgust, and/or simultaneously induce vomit while additionally never losing control of its riveting narrative, Brandon crafts one of the best films of one of the best years of cinema with an absolutely outlandish and genius concept that could only possibly be attached to a terrifyingly attracting name like "Croneberg."

This film fails to be entertaining as you have no sympathy for anyone in it, the premise is ridiculous. It's get sick in a way, but in a way that don't matter. The directing was ok and the acting was ok but just based on originality and the conceot I believe it could have done a lot better. As that being said, for this being a terrible film, and end up not enjoy it, I give " Antiviral" an F.

Pretty rad high-concept body-horror film. I was quite impressed with what young Cronenberg presented us with, it's up there in quality with his Dad's stuff. Strange that their styles would mirror each other soo closely. It drags on a little too long, but stays engaging thanks to Landry being endlessly watchable.

3.25* This was a very different sci-fi horror. I loved the fact that it was so unique and that they ran balls out all the way with the concept/premise. It's a futuristic society where celebrity obsession has gone way too far. Caleb Landry Jones does a phenomenal job playing the lead. His performance is very authentic and you easily buy into what he's selling. This is a very unique movie so if you want something that follows the standard blueprint, you won't be a fan of this. But I definitely rec it. I find it fascinating that this was made in 2012.

My favorite movie of all time, and I've seen a lot of movies. Antiviral is a social commentary film on how we as a society get obsessed with celebrities, going so far as to even change ourselves to be like them. However, in this movie they go much farther than we do, at least farther than we have yet. We get plastic surgery to look like our favorite celebrities, we mimic what they do, it's only logical that some day we'll be injecting ourselves with their own blood and diseases. This shows a dystopian society, however it's not far off from the truth. We become so obsessed sometimes that we even hurt ourselves. Antiviral is a great movie, and Caleb Landry Jones did absolutely amazing in it. I would definitely recommend it, and I have!

Unfortunately, it's antiviral in the sense that this movie will never catch on. Added an extra half-star for smallish Malcolm McDowell part. Lots of coughing and hacking and a little bleeding. Not much else from David Cronenberg's son's first feature.

Caleb will have a golden globe in the future once they start giving him parts worthy of one . Movie just stretched on for too long tho

There are a lot of great and highly relevant ideas in Brandon Cronenberg's washed out, highly stylized debut. He owes a lot to his father in the subject matter, but his visual style is all his own. Deeply disturbing, it also doesn't feel like a stretch to think that we are just a step away from the culture depicted in Antiviral, a world where people pay good money to be injected with diseases collected from celebrities or eat mean cloned from their DNA. It's a solid idea, which carries the film. The actual execution, and especially plot, stumble occasionally, and the final moments push the idea beyond the limits of credibility. That hardly matters, as everything that comes before it dives right into our celebrity obsession highlighting just how disturbing it is in a way that even films that are critical of the cultural obsession have managed to do.
