Dec 29, 2024

Any least than a 5 star rating is comical

This movie was sooo bad. A stinker for sure.

great actors on a poor script. Started slow and stayed that way. A log of terrible dialogue. Ended up watching about half of the movie and then jumping to the end. Glad I didn't pay to go see this movie.

Despite the strong performances from Depp and Theron, this movie wields a pretty predictable plot. Like the sort of thing you can guess immediately, say ten minutes or so into the movie. Aswell as that, the dialogue is at points on the forced/cringy side and certain aspects of the story just don't make logical sense (or you make your own logic to make it make sense... either way it's bad) But with the decent acting (mostly) and the few scenes of shock or build up that actually work I deem this film 'watchable'... It'll probably just be easier if you've had one of those days at work where you're brain has turned to complete mush.

I enjoyed the premise for the most part (a 4th dimensional being(?) taking over the body of an astronaut and then using the wife as a way to reproduce) but this film explored really nothing about the whole "the twins will be pilots" even though they are mentioned a ton and is basically the entire agenda for the alien. I mean, pilots for what exactly? Why did you need kids as pilots? And the film didn't explore the alien aspect very much, mostly just examines the wife losing her mind figuring out her "husband" isn't actually her husband anymore. Plus, some of this dialogue is so bad and some characters are literally so annoying. Other than that, I was entertained and enjoyed Depp's and Theron's performance a bunch

Spencer Armacost (Johnny Depp) is an astronaut working for NASA, and his wife Jillian (Charlize Theron) is a second-grade elementary school teacher. While he and Alex Streck (Nick Cassavetes) are walking in space on a mission there is an explosion that knocks out their communication with the command center. They land but when their spouses arrive to see them they are in the hospital; both asleep until they recover. Armacost eventually wakes up without problems, but Streck has a medical emergency requiring him to have an electrical cardioversion. Neither speak about the in-flight emergency. Armacost accepts a position with a New York-based company, McClaren. At a farewell party, Streck's aggressive behavior catches Jillian's attention before he suddenly dies from what NASA attributes to a stroke. At the Streck house Natalie Streck (Donna Murphy) electrocutes herself in the bath with a radio. In New York at a party, Jillian asks Spencer to tell her about the space walk incident. He answers while he starts to make love to her. At home he makes aggressive love to her. She finds out she is pregnant, and at an ultrasound discovers she is having twins. She tells the doctor that earlier in her life, after her parents died, she sought psychiatric care because she started to see her loved ones dead, including herself. Sherman Reese (Joe Morton) has been terminated from NASA because he continued to insist that something was wrong with Spencer, though all tests came back normal. Reese confronts Jillian to warn her, and she leaves in fear, wanting to believe he is crazy but knowing he is right about Spencer being different. Jillian calls Reese and he tells her that Natalie was pregnant with twins at the time of her suicide. Jillian asks what the autopsy showed about the twins and Reese tells Jillian that he needs to meet her in person to show her. Spencer intercepts him, and he goes missing. As a backup plan, he has sent her a key to a self storage locker that has a VHS video cassette that explains that there was a signal in space near Spencer and Streck when they lost contact with NASA. He believes the signal was an alien that wanted to get to Earth and traveled as a sound wave through space, taking over Spencer's body... Rotten Tomatoes consensus reads: "Despite the best efforts of its talented leads, The Astronaut's Wife moves at a snail's pace and fails to generate enough intrigue to keep viewers engaged." Joe Leydon of Variety wrote, "Rosemary's Baby gets an extraterrestrial twist in The Astronaut's Wife, an aggressively stylish but dramatically flaccid drama that plays like an upscale reprise of a '50s sci-fi potboiler," while Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly rated it C+ and wrote, "The movie is far from incompetent; it simply has too few surprises to justify its indulgent atmosphere of malignant revelation." Janet Maslin of The New York Times wrote that the direction is better than she expected but the writing is "ridiculously derivative," while Mick LaSalle of The San Francisco Chronicle stated, "The movie might not be perfect, but it deserved better than to be dumped into theaters. I rather enjoyed it." Kevin Thomas of the Los Angeles Times described it as "a moderately diverting thriller that builds suspense and entertains effectively". "The Astronaut´s Wife" is a truly wishy washy sci-fi thriller with not much of thrilling or exciting moments. Nothing really works in this film to my opinion. Johnny Depp and Charlize Theron hardly comes up to their standard, which makes you wonder if the director was actually on the set. The film was a box office bomb, no surprise there. Leave this one alone. No need to see.

A solid thriller, that makes interesting a boring premise.

I think the critics that gave this movie a bad review need to have their heads examined. It was a solid movie and I appreciated the twist of an ending.

The Astronaut's wife is a bad film- no two ways about it. The plot is basically Rosemary's baby in a science fiction template. Johnny Depp and Charlize Theron play a married couple about to have a baby when Depp, an astronaut is assigned a space mission. Something happens out there and although he returns in one shape something is amiss. The film is slow paced and doesn't really go anywhere, from what I remember. This is a film that should be considered only if nothing else interests you in the science fiction catalogue.

Charlize Theron is great, but she can’t save this poorly written slow-moving screenplay.

I've always enjoyed 'The Astronauts Wife', and have come back to it multiple times over the years. Sure, I can agree that its pacing is a slow build, but just like Rosemary's Baby, I found the pay-off and snails pace progression to fit the story they where trying to tell. It's not a cinematic masterpiece, but there is enough here to keep me reflecting on my experience with a positive light. Charlize is great and an early Depp does a great normal man, something that has become a rarity in his career. Fans of thrillers with a human, yet sci-fi edge, check out 'The Astronaut's Wife" you might just be surprised.

The Astronaut's wife is a strange film to review. It isn't a great film- heck, I don't remember much of it, but it isn't bad either.

A rare misfire from JD. This film just doesn't happen...shame as it had a decent cast but it feels like an X-Files episode...a bad one.

Suprise ending totally creepy

This movie was absolutely terrible. Although it has a packed cast (which is what drew my interest) - it was just a major disappoint. The writing was terrible, it was extremely boring, and I had to try and fight to stay awake for the crappy ending that I thought might give the movie some sort of redemption (which it didn't and I wish I would have just taken the nap).

So awesome I am going to watch it again tonight... And it's 2016!

An interesting sort of modernized version of Rosemary's Baby... Creepy. But the seduction scene made me wonder if the director was really going for a sci-fi thriller, or if he'd written and directed for the excuse to shoot a soft-core scene with Charlize Theron and Johnnie Depp. As usual, not necessary for the film. Recently watched another movie with a body-snatched spouse, but this was a little more believable considering how PTSD does alter the personality of a person and that the astronaut retained some semblance of liveliness. Also, although Charlize struggles to terminate the life within herself, as we live in a world amidst a battle for the mind and soul, any woman considering such a thing who's seen the movie will be reminded of the callousness of the wealthy wife who made little of the decision. Add that to the justifiable anguish Charlize portrayed and yet would not stop her from her plan, and you have the very attack that would play through the mind of women considering such an action; "I'm sorry, but you'll understand..." directed to the life within her. What the moment fails to drive home is, unlike in a real-life scenario, a woman considering such a choice in anguish is not doing so because in her womb is some sort of alien monstrosity who surely threatens the existence of mankind... This movie was done quite well and had some horrifying, alien suspense, but it just slightly missed the mark for 4-star status, and thus the list of movies suitable for viewing again (mostly due to the unnecessariness in the sex scene).

I'm not sure why I didn't catch this the first time I watched it, but this film is really just "Rosemary's Baby" with a sci-fi twist. I hadn't seen this film since it was first released on video and it's one that was always memorable to me, but it's also one that I wasn't all that impressed with either. The film features a handsome cast with Johnny Depp as an astronaut who returns from space just a bit off and different and Charlize Theron plays the titular wife. Theron soon becomes pregnant and then begins suspecting her husband is not really himself anymore. That's really the same story as "Rosemary's Baby" where Mia Farrow became pregnant and starts to suspect that her husband in in league with a coven of witches. What that film did so well si that it focuses on whether Rosemary was going crazy or if it was really happening to her. This film instead focuses more on unravelling the mystery of what happened to her husband in space,w which is not nearly as interesting of a story. However, as I said earlier, this film is one that did always kind of stick in my memory because of a strong performance by Theron, an uncharacteristic performance for Depp (playing a cocky blond haired, southern good ol' boy Top Gun type of character), directions that had a visual style that was stylish but not Michael Bay-distracting, an excellent score by George S. Clinton (which I actually own after my first viewing and I had to get out again after rewatching it) and also a memorably filmed final death scene. Underused actor Joe Morton also gives a strong supporting role and I also remember getting a kick out of seeing Clea DuVall playing an attractive character as Theron's younger sister instead of her usually dark and dowdy characters. You also get Nick Cassavetes, Samantha Eggar, Blair Brown and the great Tom Noonan in small roles. While I think the script lets down all these other fine points, I'd still be very interested to see writer/director Rand Ravich get behind the camera again because I really do think he had a very distinct and sensual approach to his direction. He may have been greatly helped by ace photographer Allen Daviau, but it's hard to say since this was Ravich's sole putting as a director. Overall, this is a flawed and derivative story, but it does have some elements that make it very much worth watching.

Properly freaky science-fiction thriller with Johnny Depp giving a good performance. The film's claustrophobic atmosphere is the highlight.
