Barbarella Reviews

I’m not sure if this is the right place to share, but it seems like it might contain explicit adult content. It also seemed to be quite disrespectful towards women.

A time capsule of pure camp and mayhem, Fonda doesn’t dig deep, but her presence offers a crucial grounding against the cartoonish chaos.

Barbarella 41. Jahrhundert.

Naughty Jane Fonda 60s sci-fi sex-romp and satire...Which introduced the world to Duran Duran...Which has Jane playing a ridiculous intergalactic James Bond type spy character on a mission for the President...This is actually quite cute and charming most of the time; and harmless...(By today's standards)...Whether or not you enjoy it or not will depend on your tolerance of silly camp. I didn't mind it. But this was also the big turning point in Jane's career when she went from cute, innocuous 60s cupie doll; to daring Baby Boomer activist and provocateur. This is the point when she started getting DANGEROUS...

Thoroughly fun and impossibly over the top (for its time anyway). A fun and somewhat sarcastic sci-fi romp with Miss Fonda looking sexy and fine AF. Watch for the visuals, don't take it too seriously and consider it a reflective time piece for the changing (and loosening) cultural values of 1968.

Space sexcapade fantasy adventure. Its fun, theres an adventure, the world is alluring, as well as the cast.

I believe I could not come up with any way to make this movie better than it already is. I just like it immensely.

Barbarella is almost too errantly weird in its '60s psychedelia for its own good, but a self-aware sense of humor and a classically sexy Jane Fonda make it iconic all the same.

I get that this was made way back in the '60's but still, it is a real turkey. Script, costumes, music, acting there is nothing good in it. It only got cult status back in the day because Fonda took her top off. That is no the basis for a decent film.

This is next level weird and camp, however it gets an extra star for skimpy and nude Jane Fonda. I mean, she was really something wowzers. Watched it on Sky Cinema.

Great late 60s visuals, special effects and editing. Love the goofiness and costumes. And Jane Fonda is so sexy in this movie. Definitely worth a watch if you enjoy this type of film.

Barbarella is a soft sci-fi cheesy erotic comedy is like if Star Wars is in pornhub in 1968 at 42nd street.

I was born in 1973, so the 60s are a bit foreign to me. I'm not overly familiar with cinema from that decade except for the more renowned titles such as TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD and MARY POPPINS and GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER. I must say, after seeing this absolutely nutso movie, I'm a bit intrigued to investigate further and see what else from this era I've been missing out on. It took me a bit to succumb to the movie making style - the purposefully stilted acting and fake sets and dorky dialogue - but once I got into the groove, I must say I did find it a bit groovy. Haters be damned, I'm totally enamored by Fonda professionally and personally, and its a bit shocking to see her in this type of role, having grown up with her social issue movies and serious actress roles and, of course, 9 TO 5. She has a youthful glow about her here that is irresistible. It's like seeing home movies of your grandmother. (Sorry Jane.) I've never dropped acid, but I imagine if I did, my mind would conjour up something like this, with evil dolls and killer birds and angels who have lost the will to fly. I don't know if it's something I'd watch again, at least I wouldn't go out of my way to do so, but I'm glad I had the experience, as wacky as it sometimes was.

Completely groovy, wildly psychedelic, deliciously sultry. So much fun.

It's Not Good but it's definitely entertaining in a misguided campy charming self aware way. I think what saves this from being a complete trainwreck is it is self aware a lot of times. The music isn't that good except the title track which was surprisingly catchy but everything else was forgettable and didn't fit a Sci-Fi setting. The acting overall is bad with a stupid over the top villain, the angels performance is so out of place and bizarre its unreal at times and everyone else just isn't that good. Jane Fonda has moments of charm here and there but she isn't given enough time to really do anything. Everything else is subpar as well. However the production value kind of works in a surreal way. It's very imaginative and creative while also being used in dumb cheesy ways and some bad effects but used in creative ways. The story makes sense but its weighed down by a bizarre tone. This is a weird mix of Sci-Fi, Sex Comedy, and a Exploitation Film all together. It's such a weird mixture, but I can see why this has a cult following. It never feels rapist or completely off the walls stupid without having a charm to it that something like Supergirl doesn't have. I can't really recommend this to anyone except fans of bizarre cult movies or very curious Jane Fonda fans. I can't imagine fans of the source material liking this.

For decades the debate has raged on: what is the greatest sci-fi film in the watershed year of 1968? 2001: A Space Odyssey, Planet of the Apes, or Barbarella? I don't think a single person involved in this film could see how silly everything around them was, the only person to play their role with an ounce of self-awareness is David Hemmings, and he plays a guy with the unironic name of 'Dildano'. The production value is shockingly high for the period, a major step up from the visual effects of cheap midcentury space flicks about invading aliens, and the very broad strokes of the story would predate many similar films about adventures spanning across the galaxy. Yes, it's technically a female-led film in an era when that was all but unknown, but it's only done so Dino De Laurentiis can get her half naked in the opening credits. If Barbarella came out today looking the exact same way that it did in 1968, it would be a brilliant satire of both sci-fi film, and cinema's sexual exploitation of women. But I don't think that this film really has any self-awareness to make that claim as it stands; the wobbly acting is mostly just the result of poor casting decisions, the editing is sub-par, and the direction is all over the place. I know it's not a movie that you can really take seriously and that all the strange choices, the bright colors, and the inconsistency is all part of the charm, but most of what makes it a fun watch seems to be unintentional. Still, if you like camp, Barbarella is a landmark. (2.5/5)

Its an absolutely ridiculous space sex opera that has been argued by many to be either feminist progressive storytelling or misogynistic exploitation. I think this movie lets you see what you want to see in it. Mayhap that is its lasting legacy. The popcorn was excellent, and that seems fitting.

My favorite movie of all time, bar none. I have the original movie poster framed and hanging in my office.

Diabolically bad and pointless late-sixties sci-fi turkey, crammed with awful dialogue, dismal special FX, stereotypical sixties cheesy soft rock, and an uncomfortable Jane Fonda pretending to enjoy every humiliation her then beau, Roger Vadim, requests of her. I had to bail after thirty minutes. This, Flash Gordon and Modesty Blaise would make the triple-bill from hell.

Barbarella is a fantasy space opera where Jane Fonda seeks to return the evil Duran Duran to Earth after it is found that he has created a deadly weapon. Cheesy special effects reminiscent of the original BW Flash Gordon highlight the fantastic sets and visual images of this film. The plot, dialogue, and acting are all intentionally absurd and campy. Don't attempt to explain this film, just watch the visuals which are at times psychedelic and dream like. The musical group Duran Duran derives their name from the character in this story where he plays an organ (a sex organ?) that kills people with pleasure.
