Critics Consensus

Critics say The Beach is unfocused and muddled, a shallow adaptation of the novel it is based on. Points go to the gorgeous cinematography, though.

Victoria Luxford BBC.com An intriguing mystery with a great soundtrack. I think Leonardo DiCaprio has had such an interesting career, and this is a great example of what he does so well. Rated: 3/5 Apr 6, 2023 Full Review Lisa Alspector Chicago Reader A narrative that tries to juggle thriller elements, tons of pop culture imagery, and way too much philosophical baggage. Apr 6, 2010 Full Review David Ansen Newsweek The Beach is nothing to write home about, though the landscapes are ravishing. The movie itself is neither fish nor fowl. Mar 31, 2008 Full Review Danny Brogan Common Sense Media Sun, sea, and observations on how Richard (a young DiCaprio) survived the world without a smartphone, make this 2000 film a satisfying title to reflect on with families. Rated: 3/5 Apr 13, 2022 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com the beach featured in The Beach was soon ruined by visitors, a detail that fits in with the reductive, wrong-headedness of the whole enterprise Rated: 2/5 Mar 30, 2022 Full Review Tony Black Cultural Conversation Apocalypse Now 2 - Beach Vacation. Jack G A far cry from the quality and message of the book. Completely Hollywoodized. The love triangles don't even make any sense. So why did Etienne stick around and not bash in Richard's skull? His girlfriend cheats on him and from then on he's just some barely noticeable side character. Like what were they thinking with that. Sal has a crush on him and so sleeps with him during the rice run? Why change what was in the book? It was a perfectly fine event. This could have actually been a pretty darn good adaptation if only Hollywood left their grimy hands off it. Garland should have just filmed it himself. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/28/25 Full Review Jessica P RT was a baby when this movie came out. R&E were the people back then. They had a whole show! This movie was a great opening to get out of basic life. Us kids of the 90s and 00s had no idea what we we were doing and where to go. This movie, for me, gave me options. It let me dream of where I may end up, or the person that I may become. The best part of the movie is getting through it. Leo liked these hard roles. And this one is hard. No one ever wants to deal with bad bs . I say, watch if it interests you. The show is about people who find that paradise isn't real. Unless you want to turn away from humanity. On more than one level. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/07/25 Full Review Diane S Have continued to love this movie and tell people about it when discussing the garret beaches of the world. While the storyline has a bit of the troubled-adventure-seeking-young- lad-doing-something-stupid and then falling into a bigger pit than he expected -a cliche for sure, it's well- done by Dicaprio and the director. Yes, the scenery is amazing and it's real. But most of you will never get to Thailand and see it. And isn't Thailand the prime destination for men wanting to behave badly while being around gorgeous landscape, even when it's not on the beaches? The preview makes it look like the story is about the girl. It's not. That's just typical for this kind of movie. The trouble is what is on the others of the islands from the hippie enclave that takes them in and which warns them not to venture to the other side. No mythical monsters there. Just brutal reality that going into the wild opens you up to people who don't play by the rules. A better preview would turn this into a cult classic as more open minded people would see it. It's truly unique while using some cinematic clichés as the starting point. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/21/25 Full Review Dallas H Porcelain by Moby is my favorite part of the movie. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/06/25 Full Review Maani H Just about watchable. Started ok but then then desended into a muddled plot with Richard's intangible mental collapse.
