Before We Go Reviews

For the new independent film Before We Go, it's Chris Evans's turn to be be a first-timer. The promise is there, but he has a long way to go.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Feb 16, 2024

Chris Evans is wise to pick a script that deals with a small cast that takes place over the course of a single night for his directorial debut. Evans and Eve have a pretty sweet chemistry and the tentative romance between them feels earnest.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Jun 14, 2022

Before We Go is mediocre at best and ultimately a forgettable film. Still, it's also somehow decently entertaining despite its shortcomings and occasionally drawn-out melodrama. A film best seen from the comfort of your own home.

| Original Score: 3/5 | May 2, 2019

Evans and Eve are well-paired here, and handle the dialogue-driven film with natural ease and subtlety. Both characters are given equal weight and depth, with neither falling into rom-commy conventions.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Dec 10, 2018

At least Before We Go isn't a mess, but it's not much of anything else, either.

| Oct 17, 2017

Evans and Eve as actors get a passing grade, but Evans as director fails to find a thematic centre worth sticking around to watch.

| Original Score: 2/5 | May 25, 2016

The storyline is so bland it wouldn't even pass master for a daytime soap, and the strangely off-kilter depiction of New York doesn't help.

| Original Score: 1.5/5 | Apr 6, 2016

Despite the charismatic nature of both the leads, Before We Go is a light affair that never really does more than scratch the surface of their characters.

| Feb 10, 2016

Charming actors can't save tepid relationship drama.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Sep 18, 2015

While this kind of tale is a fantasy for the movies, with an emphasis on realism in style and deliberately paced story, "Before We Go" suggests that it really can happen, even just for a fleeting moment.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Sep 14, 2015

The movies borrows from so many other films that it fails to find its own voice. [Full review in Spanish]

The film is very much what you would expect from a movie directed by Captain America. It's old-fashioned, a little corny, and almost impossible to resist.

| Sep 4, 2015

Regardless of its similarities to Before Sunrise, it mostly works.

| Sep 4, 2015

Slight and familiar but sweet enough for Saturday night, Before We Go is the umpteenth re-up of Brief Encounter, not that there's anything wrong with that.

| Sep 4, 2015

A blockbuster actor with the soul of a starving artist, Evans longs to suffer for his craft. That's only fair because most will be suffering through "Before We Go".

| Original Score: 1.5/5 | Sep 4, 2015

Very little here is special, despite the individual charms of Evans and co-star Alice Eve.

| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Sep 4, 2015

The whole effort seems to run solely on the smiles of its photogenic leads. And, frankly, the smiles routinely dissipate any perceived tension.

| Sep 3, 2015

Before We Go is a nice enough effort, a little movie with a big heart.

| Sep 3, 2015

A modest, briskly paced actors' movie.

| Sep 3, 2015

"Before We Go" has to use every bit of its lead actors' appeal to overcome a script stuffed with practiced nonchalance and false notes.
