Critics Consensus

Beneath the Planet of the Apes delivers more action than its predecessor -- unfortunately, at the expense of the social subtext that elevates the franchise's best entries.

Miguel T A total disaster of a movie, especially remembering that we came form one of the best films of all time. Beneath the Planet of the Apes has the hard task of continuing after one of the best endings of cinema, and this is the reason why Heston charactee appears so little. Apes presence is still menacing, and the cult scene is really disturbing, but the film focuses more on our new and forgetable protagonist and on the underneath society (that is absurd) that on continuing the dilemas presented and discussed on the previous film. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/16/25 Full Review Euan P It may have been strange, to say the least, but great performances keep this movie afloat. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/06/24 Full Review Christopher R Grossly underrated — a worthy sequel that turns the story on its head. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/03/24 Full Review Charlie P An enjoyable movie. Not the best Apes movie but by no means the worst. The reveal of Taylor towards the end made it really feel like a genuine sequel. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/28/24 Full Review Conrad C It's not that the effects couldn't take me there, it's that my brain didn't want to go. Talking apes were honestly the highlight of this movie, it was everything else that went wrong. The plot felt like a poor attempt at patching together a sequel out of nothing, sorely missing the guide provided by the book for the first one. This movie went down by far the worst rabbit hole. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/22/24 Full Review Audience Member Did not care for this movie very much at all, the plot was very twisted and had a lot of holes. In general, the story felt horridly rushed. in my opinion, the movie should’ve been more planned out in order for the sequel to be more enjoyable as well.
