Beowulf Reviews

Great interpretation of the classic story. Damn good visuals, music and performances.

Easily the best motion capture film Robert Zemeckis (Tales from the Crypt, Used Cars) has made. The character animation is a bit wonky but the willingness to push the PG-13 rating, respectfulness to the source material, solid acting and epic score by frequent collaborator Alan Silvestri (Amazing Stories, Cop and ½)

Beautifully animated. The characters are depicted with seemingly real emotions. Some are better than real human actors. Good story telling.

I suggest be in the imagination mindset. And at 7 mins into the movie In my opinion the best CGI/ GRAPHICS OF anything character of the movie. At seven mins in you see a real realistic animation of a 🐶

As a viewer who has never seen this movie, I think my viewpoint is a fresh, unbiased opinion. My first reaction was "what is wrong with Beowulf's face...really bad CGI"? 2nd, Angelina Jolie CGI looks great but her dialogue is comical. Even the great Anthony Hopkins' dialogue and acting seems mis-directed. So, bad CGI, bad dialogue, comical acting, no direction and an Omen-like soundtrack...Oof, a stinker. I see some viewers gave it 5 stars, a masterpiece...Why? And why is the name Beowulf said every 2 minutes? It is like the Director is desperate to make the name legendary...in case you forget the movie's title. With such a stellar cast, legendary story and a veteran director, how did they manage to botch it so badly? It makes me want to scan YouTube for "The Making of..." to see what factors accounted for this stinker.

A fantastically entertaining ride which doesnt hold back in terms of violence and adult themes. Animation still holds up today and the story telling is 2nd to none. Is held back in places by some phoned in performances by the likes of John Malcovitch who just seemed bored but Rey Winstone and Anthony Hopkins where fanstastic. Would recommed to anyone and will hold its own against the likes of 300 or dare I say it Gladiator.

This movie is the best screen adaptation of Beowulf.

The script isn't bad but the animation is really distracting.

Still a piece of art even more than a decade after its release. Great animation, awesome action scenes and perfect soundtrack

look past what now feels like outdated cgi (which really isn't bad even now), there's some good voice acting and strong story here. worth the view at least once

Fantasticaly well-done and cinematography that is just wonderful, this film was one of the first #D greats of the 21st century that led the way to technological breakthroughs. W real visual treat and probably the best version of a film on this great epic poem.

Guy knocks up a witch who makes him a rich King, then bails on their supernatural baby and wonders why the messed up babydaddy teenager comes back as an angry dragon that tries to torch his kingdom. mmmk

A bold move for a director who previously did The Polar Express back in 2004.

Ok first of all the animation and special effect were amazing considering this movie came out like 15 years ago. But the story was meh. I honestly didn't like the entire first half. It came off as pretty exaggerated. Idk how to explain it. It felt almost like a kids movie or something. But it got a lot better in the second half. I'm not sure if I'd recommend this movie. If you're a fan of medieval/viking type movies and a fan of Beowulf in general then you should give it a chance.

Great story and good specials effects.

Despite the appeal of it's "groundbreaking" technology wearing off over the years, Beowolf still manages to remain a technical feat, (particularly in facial animations), and is a thrilling retelling of an epic....in epic proportion.

The Beginning was creepy and amazing as it shows off the epic monster and Beowulf's fight with it was equally amazing and some of the characters were likeable Then Beowulf went to kill Grendel's mother who earlier killed all of Beowulf's men except for one for some reason he decides to fuck the chick who killed most of his friends and after that he only gets more unlikeable as he cheats on his wife and lies to the people who trust him. Then the ending came along which was extremally anti climactic and the Main Villain gets away unpunished for her crimes.

What do you get when you take a good poem and add strange romantic subplots and make the main protagonists responsible for all of the destruction? You get this movie. Allow me to elaborate (Alert: This review contains spoilers). Firstly, this movie creates a strange romantic quadrilateral between Hrothgar and Beowulf (the book protagonists), the Queen, and Grendel's Mother. Plus, there are many other odd romantic encounters within the movie. Nothing like that is in the book. In fact, as far as I remember, there is not a mention of sex within the book (if there was, it was very brief). This quadrilateral+ creates abusive situations for the queen and others, which again, was not in the book. Secondly, this movie makes the main book protagonists responsible for all of the destruction. This is because in the movie, Hrothgar and Beowulf are the fathers of the two monsters, a dragon and a giant humanoid, who cause all of the damage because they were seduced by Grendel's Mother (despite the strange genetic mechanics of all of this). In the book, that was not true. In the book, Hrothgar was a good king who brought prosperity to his people. In the movie, he is an incompetent drunkard. They really went out of their way to tear down these two characters. So what does all of this mean? Why did they distort things so much? I think it is because they wanted to change the theme. The theme of the book is that humans can be great if they act bravely and strongly. The theme of the movie is that male sexual desires INEVITABLY (caps for emphasis) cause the destruction of society and create abusive situations for others. To make that massive theme shift, almost a 180, they had to create and distort events from the book. That theme shift alone makes this movie worthy of a 1-star review. But, even if it were standalone (not connected to the book), I wouldn't give it any more stars. The mechanics of the events in the movie were awkward (didn't make since with each other), the cinema was reminiscent of a video game cutscene, and the plot was still awkward and not compelling. So, even if you tried to disconnect the movie from the book, it would be worth 1-star. Connected to the book, it is surely 1-star. It is unfortunate that a fairly good epic poem has to be associated with a movie like this.
