The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas Reviews

It’s a movie that never fails to entertain me, with its bright performances, amusing musical numbers, and a soundtrack that still has a place in my CD collection.

There are, of course, some Hot Probs, but Dolly ain't one. Our National Treasure holds the floor, and even sneaks in her own song to round out the catchy soundtrack.

About as sexy and funny as a bad translation of the Marquis de Sade.

"The Best Little Whorehouse" is, in spots at least, a romping musical good time.

| Original Score: 6/10 | Dec 31, 2023

Mild entertainment but somewhat disappointing.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Dec 31, 2023

The producers have transformed a gentle, well-meaning, satirical Broadway musical into a parody of itself.

The movie's number is up long before Durning does a disarming song about political obfuscation, and it would not be accurate to say he steals the picture. It is not worth taking.

| Original Score: 1/4 | Dec 31, 2023

Beyond the superficial prettiness, director Colin Higgins has to be congratulated for his effectiveness at handling that trickiest of problems in film musicals -- the moment at which a character bursts into song.

| Dec 31, 2023

Its treatment of the oldest profession is about as sexy as orthopedic shoes.

| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Dec 31, 2023

If you are hopelessly addicted to either or both of the stars, you may find enough In this weak, forgettable, overhyped film to sustain your interest for two hours.

| Dec 31, 2023

Despite miscasting, and a silly rewriting of the plot, it's kind of fun, in a bouncy, cartoon-like sense.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Dec 31, 2023

"The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" is a bit like a two-hour rest on a vibrating bed -- it makes you feel good, but you're not really sure why.

Managing to find a silly, escapist side to police corruption—not to mention women, sex, and the law...

| Jun 12, 2023

The music and the dancing are poor at best, and an embalmed kind of perfectionist's poor at that. Then there's director Collin Higgins. This guy's inability to create rhythm, in scenes as well as between them, could leach the life out of any script.

...neither Parton nor Reynolds seem comfortable with the enforced intimacy...

| Original Score: 2/5 | May 16, 2021

This isn't a very engaging idea. Neither outrageous enough to be funny nor apt enough to be clever, it's a rickety hook to hang a movie on.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Sep 21, 2020

The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas is just about everything it’s meant to be – a couple of diverting hours in the dark.

A bawdy good time. All but stolen by Charles Durning as the sidestepping governor and Dom DeLuise as the leader of the decency police.
