Critics Consensus

Though Blade II offers more of what worked in the original, its plot and character development appear to have been left on the cutting room floor.

David Edelstein Slate There's no script to speak of, but del Toro devises every battle to wow even the most jaded martial-arts mavens; the dissolutions and implosions are beautiful. Jul 14, 2015 Full Review Alexander Walker London Evening Standard It is directed by Guillermo del Toro: by "directed" I simply mean he turned his camerawork over to the computer graphics surgeons who cut, slice, dice and vivisect the material to mount a gross eyeassault of CG sequences. Jul 14, 2015 Full Review Jack Mathews New York Daily News Del Toro is a stylish horrormeister, and he has created an evocative, foreboding atmosphere. But only a fan of this kind of mayhem could find a way into the story. And only a critic, sworn to serve, could stick it out to the end. Rated: 1.5/4 Jul 14, 2015 Full Review John Wilmes The Ringer Twenty years ago, Wesley Snipes and Guillermo del Toro paved the way for everything from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to ‘Twilight’... Mar 23, 2022 Full Review Matt Patches Polygon It's a movie with real stakes - and not just the ones Blade throws through vampiric hearts. Oct 20, 2021 Full Review Matt Goldberg Collider Blade II is an incredibly upbeat picture, and rather than focus on Blade's loneliness or how he's humanity's protector and yet can never truly be one of them, del Toro gleefully jumps into the action scenes. Nerd W Not quite as good as 1 Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/21/25 Full Review J H This is my favorite vampire movie of all time. Excellent work by Phil Tippett and Steve Johnson. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/09/25 Full Review Audience Member As good as the first one but imo a little better than first one Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/25 Full Review Rami A It's a decent sequel, but falls flat on many levels. The setup is slow and the story is predictable. Had they stuck with one director, the films would've flowed better as each one feels disconnected from one another. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/07/25 Full Review Ishara L It's a better movie, way better directed. But that's to be exteced with Guillermo del Toro in control of the project. It's a lot more fun, less clunky. Mind, it's still not as good as his Hellboy projects, but there's a lot to be said about this one. Wesley Snipes is more comfortable with this rol and seems to have trained a lot more since the first movie. His movements while fighting are a lot more fluent (and better shot, so they come across a lot better). There's cgi during the fights for the superhuman stuff they couldn't do in practical, and that's where it shows its age unfortunately. Besides that, it could be have been made 10 years ago. Unbelievable it's a 23 year old movie now. And that I watched it a lot during my teenage years, I have forgotten everything about this, besides the ending. Norman Reedus was a bit disappointing in this, alas. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/25 Full Review Rick C I enjoyed Blade II marginally more than the first movie, with its raised stakes and plot twists. Wesley Snipes once again carried with his charismatic performance of the titular character. I was surprised how many big names are attached to this one including the likes of Norman Reedus, Ron Perlman, and of course the director himself Guillermo Del Toro. I was too young in the early 2000s to know if those names were as big then as they are now, but it's always fun when I spot talent I recognize in media I haven't seen before.
