Blue My Mind Reviews
Thirteen meets Ginger Snaps in this Swiss queer coming of age film that reinforces the intimacy of teen girl friendships and the horrors of our changing bodies. Features gorgeous cinematography and a fantastic lead performance by Luna Wedler
| Original Score: 4/5 | May 30, 2024
It was a relatable coming of age story with a twist. It was heartbreaking and hopeful and I can’t praise it enough.

Blue My Mind is equal parts beautiful and wonderfully repulsive.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 27, 2021
It's scary sure, but there's a flesh-thick understanding

More than a poignant portrayal of female puberty, Blue My Mind is an allegory for escaping the stifling constraints society places on young women.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 3, 2020
"Blue My Mind" uses the fantastic and horrific to delve into themes of growing up, awakening sexually, and the angst and disorientation of trying to find your place in a world where you don't fit.
| Original Score: B+ | Jun 30, 2020
As Brühlmann's first feature, there's a sense she's trying to lay on some things too thick (drugs! sex!) while being too relaxed with regards to narrative urgency. Nonetheless, Blue My Mind is a noble debut from the Zurich-born director.

A disconcerting premise plays out with chilling logic in Swiss actress Lisa Brühlmann's directorial debut.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jun 21, 2019
The tension dissipates. And the final pay-off, which is effectively Wedler trussed up in the world's worst mermaid costume, is a borderline insult.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Jun 21, 2019
It is flawed, but has a good performance by Wedler.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Jun 19, 2019
While Blue My Mind does present elements that are prevalent in coming-of-age narratives, [Lisa Brühlmann] manages to blend them into something that's as fresh as the film's blue-hued cinematography.

Mia is a tortured, enigmatic soul. Whatever she's becoming, wherever this journey takes her, we resonate - because our bodies once did the same thing.

Short story: come for the teen angst, stay for the body horror. Oh, and HOT TIP: Don't watch the trailer if you want to be surprised.

Blue My Mind may bewilder some viewers, however those who want to watch an alternative coming of age tale will be more than pleased with this intriguing gem.
| Original Score: 8/10 | Nov 26, 2018
Rather like its misleadingly punny title, "Blue My Mind" wants to work on multiple levels, but falters to become a slightly unconvincing, if well-made, single-entendre.

As push-pull friendships in churning waters go, Mia's and Gianna's is the visceral heart of Brühlmann's film, which otherwise isn't the greatest mix of teen angst and body horror you're likely to see, but also nowhere near the worst.
| Nov 8, 2018
Brühlmann's feature debut impresses with its ingenuity and willingness to take risks.
| Nov 3, 2018
Lisa Brühlmann's Kafkaesque sexual awakening exists somewhere between Raw, Girlhood and The Fly.
| Original Score: B+ | Nov 1, 2018
If anything, Brühlmann takes too mild a touch with the mermaid metaphor in Blue My Mind.
| Oct 26, 2018
This is an eye-opening vantage into the toxicity of the teenage experience; in fact it's often the non-transformation scenes that horrify.
