Bra Boys Reviews
They say it is a one-sided telling of history, but for me that is OK as the police and the Australian press pretty much told the other side so it was good to understand more of their background and they were awesome surfers.
The only real deal to watch here is the narration done by Russel Crowe. The whole film was emotionally manipulative and only served as a propaganda for the acceptance of gang culture. It's actually quite disturbing to see these people became street hooligans. I can't believe this film even got distributed, I mean what are we trying to teach kids these days. I know their stories are tragic but this is not the excuse for them to pretend they are cool.
There's no panache or cleverness to the style and presentation and it's a very partisan view given. The bra boy culture is interesting though and there's some ace surf footage.
Didn't anyone get in trouble for missing work? They sort of glossed over who's funding this whole lifestyle! Inferno Man was the highlight!!
A really interesting documentary, looking into the lives of the Abberton brothers and their surfing gang called the Bra Boys. The footage is pretty raw, and it's definitely a directors cut, and that director being an Abberton brother. It's not the most free flowing documentary, and the inexperience from the filmmakers are evident. In saying that it does capture the lives of this surfer gang, and its community well. Though they've made many wrong choices choices, as a result of unstable upbringings, they are frowned upon by many. But this really delves into a story of how they've stuck together, and how much love they have for each other as a family. They're tough, brave, talented, but also very stupid in their choices as individuals. Surfing is a major part of their lives, and this doc. really highlights that, and how they use it to move forward. This story is shocking somewhat, heartfelt at times, but its a very human story. Definitely worth a watch!
I wish I hadn't watched this. It was a poorly made doco with all the cliche trade-marks of an amateur home-made doco. The sad bits were excessively emphasised with over-dramatic music, cuts and montages. Some of the interview pieces had poor audio and lighting. However the story of the bra boys is a touching story, it reveals the harshness of life in those areas and the good and bad impacts family and community support have on the children in the community.
pretty cool documentary on a surfing gang from Sydney. The film follows one particular set of brothers, the Abberton's, through their legal troubles stemming from incidents related to their community. The film has some really great surf footage but at times devolves into a glorification of their life choices and their crappy situation they live amidst. Also, their are moments where the film turns into Jackass. The two best moments? when a guy gets a firecracker dropped in his sagging board shorts, right in his crack. hysterical. and Cyclops? sickest wave ever.
very interesting! learned a lot of different things in this.. and I have much respect for the Abberton brothers
A very provocative Australian documentary of the infamous surf community the Bra Boys. This was very good film making with the right informative and emotional tones. A very honest portrayal of the group which is very important for a documentary like this. If I had to choose to join any "gang" today the Bra Boys would be my first pick. They're everything a gang should be they defend their community, have no racial prejudice and use the surf as an alternative to violence and drugs (for the most part). I'm not a surfing person but I got really into this film and the culture of these characters.
