At the start of the New Year, 32-year-old Bridget (Renée Zellweger) decides it's time to take control of her life -- and start keeping a diary. Now, the most provocative, erotic and hysterical book on her bedside table is the one she's writing. Johanna Thomas-Corr New Statesman Sadly, the film is tragically, depressingly, awfully of its time... The transition to screen stripped out much of Fielding's irony, nuance and cynicism. Jul 28, 2021 Full Review Andrew O'Hagan Daily Telegraph (UK) It's fine, for an evening, if you just want to pack your troubles in an old kit bag. Mar 1, 2018 Full Review Charlotte O'Sullivan Independent (UK) That Zellweger can make us believe in Bridget's heaving inner world is par for the course -- she's a supremely talented comic actress. That she was willing to risk her own status as sex symbol by looking like an everywoman is really impressive. Nov 13, 2017 Full Review Simon Gallagher Screen Rant 24 years on, there's still a lot to love about Sharon Maguire's charming British comedy, even after all the discourse. Rated: 8/10 Feb 18, 2025 Full Review Yasser Medina Cinefilia Frankly, it's a rather boring, simplistic, humorless romantic comedy that often remains grounded in a series of clichés that take away resonance from the diary of the indecisive thirty-something played by Renée Zellweger. Elisa Terribly so cheesy and so dated - a portrayal of women as dumb and with a low self-esteem, and entirely dependent on men. An insult to women. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/02/21 Full Review Daniel B Really dull and simplistic love triangle story much of which I suspect was left on the cutting room floor. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/14/25 Full Review Audience Member A really fun, minimalist movie Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/05/25 Full Review Rami A These types of films always evoke a sense of innocence. While it's easy to come up with an idea like this, making it work is the challenging part. Renée Zellweger gives her all in her performance as Bridget Jones, despite her attempt at a British accent. Overall, it's a fun movie and can be viewed as a way to escape from something. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/29/25 Full Review Abe A Not an awful movie, but not a great movie. Just baby-soft pabulum ground down to a soft consistency and fed through a teat to the audience; plot is non-propulsive, story is entertaining but flaccid, and I suppose it's watchable for an airplane flight home from Brussels to the US but you learn absolutely nothing. The 'twists' are somewhat predictable, the diary conceit is silly, but while it's bad, it's bad in a good way. I did like Hugh Grant, Renee Zellweger wasn't half-bad but was, frankly, a tad over the top, and the Colin Firth character wasn't greatly believable. If you're going to contrast Firth with Grant at least give us an explanation for why Zellweger's character should be attracted to two very different types. None's presented. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/25/25 Full Review Mason M Though Bridget Jones's Diary is far from lacking in flaws, it still remains to be a cute and often quite amusing film that I couldn't help but enjoy.
