Alan French Sunshine State Cineplex Broke is not a new classic in the Western, but it certainly proves that Russell can elevate a project by himself. Rated: 6/10 May 16, 2025 Full Review Sean Chandler Sean Chandler Talks About Broke feels like a blend of To Build a Fire and a sad country song. Wyatt Russell shines as a rodeo rider stranded in a blizzard, reflecting on lost love, pain, and purpose. A quiet, emotional western drama worth checking out for genre fans. Rated: B May 15, 2025 Full Review JK Sooja Common Sense Media Solid performances from Wyatt Russell and Dennis Quaid can't keep this rodeo drama on its horse. May 14, 2025 Full Review Mark Keizer MovieWeb Broke gets by on its recognizable themes and Russell’s performance, which papers over the fact that little here is particularly new and not all of it works. Rated: 2.5/5 May 9, 2025 Full Review Luna Guthrie Collider Eubank's direction has a tenderness for its characters and for the little worlds they build around themselves, bursting full of hopes and dreams that we really want to see them achieve. Rated: 7/10 May 6, 2025 Full Review Jennie Kermode Eye for Film Both Russell and Quaid are very much at ease around the trappings of the ranch where their characters live, their background behaviours adding to the overall sense of authenticity. Thunder B Broke is beautifully shot, and masterfully acted and directed. You wouldn't expect a movie about rodeos to be so sensitive and so emotionally raw, but this movie is less about bronco riding specifically and more about the compulsions that drive people to do insane things like ride bucking broncos, climb mountains, or even make art. Wyatt Russell's performance never hits a single false note, and Eubank's direction is so visceral you feel like you're on the horse with him. The sound design (and the choices about when to drop out sound completely) are particularly well-done and the mark of a real cinematic artist. Themes and scenarios that under a different hand might veer into sentimental or maudlin never do in this film, holding fast to the line of unflinching raw reality that just keeps you in it until the end. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/10/25 Full Review Veronica P "This movie is stunningly beautiful and there is not a wasted scene." (I agree with this statement from an IMDB review) There is also not a wasted word. The story, screenplay, acting, directing, editing, cinematography, and music were breathtaking. This movie's flashbacks are used successfully and do not break the narrative drive. This movie is flawless from the beginning to the end. I laughed and cried as I sat on the edge of my chair. I am happy I bought this movie, so I can rewatch it. Many kudos to all involved in the making of this fine film. It is one of the tightest and best movies I have ever seen. I will be keeping an eye out for more of Carlyle Eubank's deep and sensitive work. This movie is a poem and a powerful story about the hard road to redemption. Thank you for this Oscar-worthy film. Absolutely brilliant! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/07/25 Full Review Mayor of J A gripping artfully told story about True Brandywine, an American rodeo bronc rider fighting for his life - played wonderfully by Wyatt Russell. The writer/director Carlyle Eubank does an amazing job transporting the audience to a world that isn't often depicted in film and television. For those of us who live in the heartland of America, it is breathtaking and all too relatable. A must see! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/06/25 Full Review Billy B Beautiful movie. A brilliant portrait of a modern cowboy. Loved it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/06/25 Full Review Eric Z I’ve watched this at least twice and it keeps getting better. The characters are authentic and the visuals are beautiful. This the sleeper hit of the summer and is a rare gem. Keep making movies like this and less super hero garbage.
