Bushwick Reviews
From the outset the acting is wooden, why doesn't anyone pick up guns when they shoot the enemy, John's acting is ok, if the script was better he would have been better, The premise of the movie is good it just doesn't work the way it's been directed.
Interesting premise if handled adroitly, unfortunately the script is barely believable in terms of human reactions (sees a man on fire... decides to just run away despite no implied threat to self.. in first 3 minutes of film). Acting is not fantastic from the female leads. John does a good job. Soundtrack, while I love aesop rock, doesnt suit the genre nor the film.
This is what the Red Dawn remake should've been.
The movie started well, and maintained it's pace for the first 10 or so minutes. However when it would be natural for the pace to pick up, it slowed down and vice versa. The main characters have potential that is never really explored in any depth, and all side characters are there to either die, or be randomly violent. It is clear what the point of the movie was, with an obvious message that any life is expendable. But the message falls flat. The plot doesn't draw you in, the action doesn't scratch an itch, and overall it fails at being an action movie an a drama. It was just entertaining enough for me to say "wow that was bad" as the credits rolled and not half way through.
Caught it recently on streaming. Had never heard of it so I had no expectations, but thought it was a decent action romp. Brittany Snow got to display some dramatic chops, and Dave Bautista was capable in his role. If you like survival/post-apocalyptic themed movies this might be worth checking out.
Bushwick feels like a raw, unfiltered experience, and that’s part of its unique charm. It almost looks like the entire thing was shot on a cell phone, giving it this gritty, boots-on-the-ground feel that makes the chaos and tension hit even harder. That stripped-down approach really works in its favor—it doesn’t rely on flashy effects, but instead pulls you into the heart of the action, making you feel like you’re right there in the streets alongside the characters. Dave Bautista brings such a grounded, powerful performance, blending action-hero toughness with a surprising vulnerability. It’s like a 70s throwback with that low-budget, high-intensity vibe that makes it stand out from the crowd. The film’s rawness and Bautista’s presence give it a cool, DIY edge that’s hard to find in today’s polished action flicks. It’s a must-see for anyone craving something a little different.
Why does Hokeywood keep casting Barrista. He can't act and it is painful to watch him flex and grunt.
Something different and the acting is great.
The plot was confusing, the acting was horrendous, then the movie ended. The only thing I could make out of this mess was that Bushwick is supposed to be a tough neighborhood. 👎👎
Bushwick should have been a really amazing, but that was ruined by bad script writing and acting. The Lucy character is so annoying, it seems as though everything bad about the movie centers around her.
This is a hidden gem for people who love movie making and Movies that make you feel like you are in the movie (like 1917). If your love is for high budget Netflix superficial action, this movie isn't for you. What is done here with a low budget is amazing. Real life is all about the unknown, the fog of war (actually a big part of the Sopranos too). You don't know the bigger picture of what's going on, you simply try and survive. A la Cloverfield but with even less awareness. That's what real life is like and real war. And it really makes you think what it must be like during real coups. I wish there were more movies like this
Unfortunately, that went wrong. The film has a (no longer so groundbreaking) concept of cinematography where masked cuts are supposed to fool the viewer into thinking it is a one-take movie, even though these cuts are still clearly visible. Quite nicely done, but the bulk of the VFX budget seems to have gone there. The explosions look ridiculously bad (especially the scene with the backpack bomb under the HMMWV, just bad...) and the acting has also fallen by the wayside. Dave Bautista at least tries to give the film SOME life, but it's constantly ruined by his co-star Brittany Snow. In general, she doesn't seem to understand how to act in really important scenes. As soon as someone she's close to dies, there's 5 seconds of tearless crying and then it's forgotten. A finger is missing? Boo-hoo and afterwards "What finger?". Zambrana pisses me off the whole film. Actually, in the last third I was completely on the side of the bad guys. The political story is not even resolved at the end.
Engrossing film. Rather like a cross between 1917. with it's extended long cuts, and cinematic tailing of the two protagonists. Also similar in tone to Child of Men. in it's believable presentation of a urban battleground. We are swept into the action with no idea as to what is going on, And there is a lot going on. We do not know who the good guys are, nor the bad guys, No idea what is going on, but it is violent, and lots of people are getting killed. Sadly the explanation does not illuminate much, but then this is more a film about gut reactions, rather than intellect. Very well done. crummy ending. Thats war.
The lead actress confused being panicked with being annoying. Check this out: The scene where she asks a random priest: "where is father x" while having a gun on her hand (not pointed at him) and he deliberately tells her where to find him. Then she comes back saying he killed himself and the random priest doesn't even question it even though she has a gun in her hand. Hilarious
More Propaganda from the leftist lunacy.
SPOILER Bushwick was Cloverfield with a vague right wing terrorist group substituted for the monster and more guns. It could have been interesting, especially given current day politics, if the plot and characters had been developed beyond the most basic tropes. About halfway through I thought, this better not end like Cloverfield. But it did, without even the satisfaction of a monster swapping a helicopter from the sky.
Well I certainly wasn't expecting character development and huge plot twists in an action movie. So not sure why so many people have to shut this movie down for not being "The Shawshank Redemption". Besides that it was a wonderful action packed movie. Great camera work that had to be one hell of a technical achievement. Started out strong and ended strong. Will definitely have my friends check this out.
At first I thought this movie was joke on New Yorkers, but after I watched it to the end, I realized the joke was on me...
Well it worked for me. I appreciate the long takes and hidden cuts ala 1917. It also reminded me favorably of the feel of Cloverfield. The leads were solid and I was interested in them quite a bit as characters. There were several good set pieces. I walked away with a good combination of having been entertained and been given something to think about. The something to think about includes the feel and sense of loss from such a scenario. My top complaint: once again clergy are portrayed as either corrupt or, as in this case, foolish and useless.
