Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times It tries for the greatest realism in its obligatory shots of gas tanks exploding, and yet includes such absurdities as a local news helicopter that tracks all of the competitors all the way from LA to New York. Blu B The biggest problem this has is it's basically repeating the exact same plot 90% for the most part of the first one. So if you seen the first than you've seen this one. On top of that nothing this does is any better or as good as the first one. Gone is the over the top cheese, ridiculously looney tone, and any commentary this might have. Instead it sort of does like a 2015 Fantastic Four or For Your Eyes Only and strips it all down and goes very grounded with the core elements. Problem is the core elements are very weak characters that are mostly forgettable, basic direction, ok car crashes, and very jumpy editing. The music is alright but man it feels like funky elevator music that's out of place. Cinematography and acting is alright enough. Everything else isn't good though. It jumps around so much and gets worse the longer it goes. Just a bunch of stuff happens to characters that don't really matter for a super weak plot. Skip This. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/15/25 Full Review Jason A So bad. Even for a seventies movie. Acting, wardrobe, music, storyline and ridiculous exploding cars are laughable. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/17/24 Full Review william d I liked this movie when it first came out. It was perfect drive-in movie fare. Maybe it's the nostalgia talking, but I still enjoyed it. Yes, the dialogue is cheesy, the soundtrack is dated, and you can tell from the landscape that they filmed this "cross country" race without leaving California (save for some street shots of Manhattan). I like these old car movies from the 70s though, and Bill McKinney, one of cinema's great bad guys, chews up the scenery here. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Cannonball! is the low-budget 70s entertainment that fueled the inspiration of Quentin Tarantino. Sadly, this type of film just feels cheap and uninspiring to me. Weird characters, mediocre acting, and just destruction to be destructive. Not my cup of adrenaline. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member If you like low budget 70's style car movies Cannonball is for you. a low budget movie which tries. The real star is the classic cars. A few name actors, and a Stallone cameo! The cheesier humor makes this b minus film. The over pass stunt is a must see. 2 stars. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Read all reviews
