DanTheMan 2 Being the first of the franchise to embrace the period setting, providing tons of mileage for punning and farce, Carry On Jack sets its worldview at one remove, creating a universe that exists by its own laws and logic, therefore making any form of ludicrousness acceptable. Like its predecessor, it doesn't quite feel like a real Carry On film; however, where that worked in favour of Cabby, being more of a character drama, Jack has too much of a mean streak. Even with some lavish production values, most of the main team are missing, and the humour has a distinct lack of laughs, feeling more like a full-on panto and not a headfirst dive into silly absurdity. It's not a complete disaster, mind you, mainly thanks to a very likeable Bernard Cribbins in the leading role alongside an equally fantastic Juliet Mills. Some fun action and the occasional bit of humour does land during this outrageous adventure at sea, but for what it's worth Carry On Jack cruises through hot water continuously with plenty of misunderstanding, subterfuge and bad luck.
