Critics Consensus

Flawed but fascinating, Cast Away offers an intelligent script, some of Robert Zemeckis' most mature directing, and a showcase performance from Tom Hanks.

Nell Minow Common Sense Media Tom Hanks' powerful, brutal and mature story. Rated: 3/5 Dec 22, 2010 Full Review Geoff Andrew Time Out Though Hanks comes across as blandly as ever, at least his solid performance shows he's up to carrying half a movie on his own, and Zemeckis' direction is at first as busily efficient as the protagonist. Jun 24, 2006 Full Review Peter Rainer New York Magazine/Vulture Hanks's Everyman quality has never been more aptly utilized: He's the perfect stand-in for all of us who never made it to Eagle Scout. Sep 26, 2002 Full Review Robin Holabird Robin Holabird Hanks earned a well-deserved best actor Oscar nomination, carrying much of the action without talking to anyone but himself for a Wilson volleyball he finds in a washed-ashore Fed-X box. Aug 11, 2021 Full Review Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies Tom Hanks is the perfect actor for the role. Rated: 4/5 Dec 22, 2020 Full Review Michael Kleinschrodt Times-Picayune "Cast Away" is an exceptionally well-crafted exploration of the survival of the human spirit. It's a movie unafraid to consider the full complexity of life. May 30, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Samuel N I don't care what you people say, that damn volley ball was some a better actor than freaking Tom Hanks. I cry every time he floats away! :'( Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/24/25 Full Review Blu B All Time Classic. Phenominal performance by Tom Hanks. His physical acting and emotion he pours into this from start to finish is first rate. This is such a unique type of flick that fits the director perfect. The cinematography is excellent. The direction is pretty subtle and tame honestly. It's pretty basic stuff lots of time but this is such a visually heavy film for 80% of the runtime that you can follow this pretty much the entire way from the moment he gets on the plane to the end. It frontloads all the dialouge for the most part in the first 20 minutes and pulls a fake out basically. The editing is masterful too. Everything Hanks does follows a logical flow and it never feels like things just happen. It really is quite an accomplishment. It's very well paced too and the music is really good. Which is crazy because for most of the runtime there isn't really any score at all but you don't really notice it honestly and it never feels dry. This is a slow burn movie the entire way and it's crazy how again it never feels dry, boring, or meandering. Because not much happens in this action wise. It's all about watching Hanks become a survivor and exploring isolation. The ending is also in a sense very anticlimatic. Instead of wrapping things up, it feels like it just keeps going with exploring the "what happens after the credits roll". It's difficult to describe but even though it's anticlimatic it feels very in depth and interesting to see a side of returning after being lost. Finding a reason to keep going effectively and how the process of being lost effectively happens all over again. It's really in depth stuff and Hanks does an incredible job conveying those feelings the entire way. Everyone should give this a try once. It's what you expect, a surivivor story on a island but it's much more as well. A true character study. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/19/25 Full Review John R Wilson was hands down the best character Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/14/25 Full Review Roberto T There are few movies that say more with less. I think maybe comparable in that way is Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell, but whereas that one is entirely meditative (and rewarding in a very different way), this one has you still clinging on for hope. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/26/25 Full Review Audience Member Great movie about surviving on an island. Tom Hanks did great in Cast Away. Cast Away gets 5 Stars from me! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/21/25 Full Review Julian L A very sad (though a bit implausible) survival drama by the director of Back to the Future. 7.9/10.
