Catch and Release Reviews

Apr 18, 2025

Not exactly what I thought it would be. Loved Kevin Smith & Jennifer Garner... Juliette Lewis too. The story was kind of wonky, but if you're simply looking for a cute movie to watch that you won't completely hate then this will do nicely.

Jennifer Beale walks through this without connecting. Wardrobe and makep have followed directions to make her grieving and suburban. Her fiance came from a good family yet his shared house is also dreary and a bit low-bar. Could have done with a bit more style. And losing her last scene's outfit - who put her in baggy half-length pants, Walmart singlet and stringy hair??? Romance killed.

I started watching with low expectations but really enjoyed the movie. Sometimes you have to see that the critics probably only saw half the movie.

I love Jennifer Garner, but it was so hard to like her character here, due to all the choices she makes. But hey, at least it wasn't your typical character. Maybe the point was to show she was even more disfunctional than her late fiancée. Most of the fun, comes from Kevin Smith, who made the movie so much better than it actually is(even if he is too perfect of a character). In the end, it helped pass the time, even if the pacing got worse as the movie went on and it stretched a bit more than it should have.

I usually agree with Rotten Tomatoes but I’m glad I disregarded the rating and gave it a go as I enjoyed the movie and it didn’t seem dated. I thought it was well acted and was a mix of sadness and comedy and good to see that happiness was found after grief. A bit of a cliche ending but an easy watch.

I am surprised I had never seen this before as it is my type of movie but really enjoyed it and it didn’t feel at all dated. It explores the complexities of grief without being over heavy alongside the complexities of love and romance. The end is pretty cliche but it’s sweet.

Catch and Release is a surprisingly introspective film that delves into the complexities of grief, love, and self-discovery. The characters are meticulously designed with depth, each wrestling with their own vulnerabilities; making the story feel genuine and emotionally layered. The film’s writing is sharp, avoiding cliché whilst allowing unexpected turns to shape the narrative, keeping the audience engaged throughout the film. Like Eat, Pray, Love, it captures the essence of personal transformation, but with a more understated, grounded approach. While it may not have achieved critical acclaim, Catch and Release stands out for its quiet, exploration of life’s messiness.

An absolute masterpiece, way to good that its greatness flys over so many heads. It shows how grief makes us do things that are so out of character for us. Gray even says it at the end of the movie that while dealing with her loosing her fiancée, she fell for someone completely different and the only one who could understand is her passed fiancée. The movie is such a feel good movie that leaves you feeling content in all good ways. The drama, complexities, the emotions, EVERYTHING IS GOLD. If you don't agree you are just wrong.

I loved this movie! I usually agree with Rotten Tomatoes but this time, nope. All the characters had value and this was such a touching and at times, very funny movie. It's nice to see people being good to each other in the worst of situations. I also enjoyed the soundtrack. I like to play this movie and enjoy the feeling of spending some time in "Patagonia Disneyland." JUST TRY IT. It's a cool movie that we don't often see these days.

Good and likeable characters, and an interesting plot that could've been carried out much better. The weird pacing and bad scene order ruin the movie.

Very romantic, sexy movie with a bit of sadness; just the right amount. Love the connection and fire between Jennifer Gardner and Thimothy Olyphant, their acting feels really real. I still think Jennifer should have chosen Sam Jaeger who is less of a playboy but still a great ending.

The plot of this movie was so strange. Jennifer Garner starts sleeping with her dead fiance's best friend that knew he had been cheating on her and lied about the kids' age to cover for him. He only confessed when she met the boy & called him out on it. She also wants to continue supporting the dead fiance's "love child" that's a total brat that she finds out isn't even biologically his because she said the fiance had wanted to support him. He obviously only wanted to support him because he thought he was his and it was probably also hush money to keep his mistress from telling on him. Then in the end she chooses to end up with the best friend even though he has no redeeming qualities instead of the sweet guy that's been secretly crushing on her for years. The writers of this movie completely made my head hurt.

Navel gazing dreck. I watched this because it had Jennifer Garner in it, who is intermittently good in films, but this was a down day. No idea why she like Oliphant - he is sleezy and that creepy smile makes him look like a serial killer. No doubt he got his role in Die Hard from the casting director watching this film. The rest of the film is horrible self-searching melodrama done to a horrible indie soundtrack while everyone lives cooped up in some sort of hippie commune. Eesh. They even wasted Kevin Smith in this.

This movie was depressing to watch and seemed poorly written. Jennifer Garner feels robotic without an actual range of emotions. Seeing this movie made me google if other people also watched her movies and felt like in every one she was stuck up, stiff and emotionless. This led to articles about Ben Affleck saying he had to divorce her or his drinking problems would have worsened. Makes sense. After this movie I felt like it would drive me to drink if it was a minute longer.

This movie is not "boring, stock characters and contrived situations;" -It is densely packed with real-life scenarios. Moreover, it proves so very challenging in that way, that we are forced to confront these issues and make ourselves comfortable with them somehow as to their resolution ultimately. Or dismiss the film out-of-hand as boring, etc.

The acting was not too bad, I really liked the character of Sam, somehow he was less.., two dimensional than the others. Not overly dramatic, but I think it was enjoyable, sometimes it is pleasant to watch something that you are just flowing along with it and not too involved, with characters who seemed to have a rather easygoing relationships with each other. The story was a bit meh and I was a bit surprised the couple ended up together as... it did not feel to me like that to me, just seemed more like they were ok with just sleeping together I dunno. One of those films you watch and forget.

Gently rolls along, inoffensive and a little slow-moving, but I was in the right mood to watch something this pace. No real surprises in the script, or strong character development. Timothy Olyphant stood out for me - that voice! He was slightly edgy (and sexy), but Jennifer Garner's charisma didn't match his, so the chemistry wasn't as intense as it could have been. I did laugh at the physical comedy in a hilarious tussle with a hand planer - mainly thanks to Kevin Smith. All in all an average film, lifted for me by Olyphant, Smith and Juliette Lewis.

I liked this movie.

Not dramatic enough for drama, not funny enough for comedy. A lot of different directions of potential storylines that dead end. Often unrelatable. The supporting cast does most of the work.

The moment that jennifer says "Oh that's nothing... it's less than nothing" and then Timothy Olyphant gets so butthurt about it even though they agreed to tell nobody about their relationship just shows how stupid this movie is... also what the hell the guy never wanted to get a dna test done?? Oh your pregnant? Here is all my money I don't need any proof.... so dumb...
