Chariots of Fire Reviews
I was astonished when I saw the movie as a 14 year old boy in 1981 and it is still my favourite movie in 2024. The spiritual power of the movie is timeless.
Prepare to see how Eric Liddell can run so fast with such bad form and the answer is he swims on air and runs in the Scottish hills. Also see a love story between a Jewish guy and a Actress.
I was a dedicated runner when I first saw this film and for me it was a religious experience. Viewed later and more objectively, it is an impeccably crafted British film showcasing an innocence and idealism we no longer have. It touches on the issue of amateurism and perhaps fore shadows our current system of school athletes being paid. Still, the bookend running scene on the beach is what heaven would be like to many of us runners.
This film inspired me when I first saw it as a child and still inspires me now. It is about so much more than people running and winning races. It is about character, determination and having principles (increasingly rarer qualities these days) and it is a story beautifully told with an incredible theme tune. Everyone should give it a try.
Objectively, this is a very uninspiring, slow moving film that did not captivate me in the slightest. The best part of this film is the soundtrack and even then, the only notable/memorable song is the famous tune associated with this film.
Such a wonderful sports movie that it doesn't feel appropriate to put it in the box of being one.
My favorite of all time, this movie portrays the true stories of Abrahams and Liddle before they became, respectively, chairman of Britain's Amateur Athletic Association and missionary to China. Both lived heroically. While Vangelis's title theme has been parodied countless times, that stirring music fits perfectly and seriously the runners of Chariots of Fire.
A fantastic and inspiring sporting biopic that is brilliantly acted and has a score from Vangelis that remains one of the finest in cinematic history. One of the best sports movies made.
The most perfectly crafted simple movie of all time.
A bit too slow-moving for it's own good but this early 80's British film still gracefully strolls through the finish line.
While it's a somewhat meandering movie that foregrounds character over and above plot and also delivers an excellent period atmosphere of 1920s England and Scotland with Cambridge and Gilbert and Sullivan featured heavily, this film is a wonderful evocation of runners who trained and competed in the Olympics in France and their interesting paths to athletic success.
One of my favorites. I loved it 40 years ago, I still love it. A superbly directed movie. Not a spot out of place.
Great movie, beautifully shot one of the most well constructed films I have seen. Little dry but inspirational and so well told of the time and the institutions.
Just love this movie, feel good and watched many times
This has become one of those infamous it-won-the-Oscar-but-didn't-deserve-to movies, right up there with Ordinary People (beating out Raging Bull); How Green Was My Valley (beating out Citizen Kane); and Crash (beating out everything else). The only amazing thing here is the musical score, which became one of the most ubiquitous running memes ever.
This true-story would be inspiring on its own, but the writing and the wonderful score by Vangelis makes it even better, resulting in an unforgettable, gripping, and touching experience.
The Flying Scotsman is uptight and the guy at Cambridge is a bit of a self-important jerk. And of course there's a English gent sipping champagne before leaping over the hurdles. But it is beautifully made, with gorgeous music by Van Gelis, incredible scenery and an emotional story line. The American star is a mensch and I found myself humming Jerusalem and rooting for England with a few tears at the end.
Gracefully filmed but usually slow-paced, Chariots of Fire nonetheless earns its medal for telling two different personal stories that led to the same victory.
