Based on the beloved Roald Dahl tale, this comedic and fantastical film follows young Charlie Bucket (Freddie Highmore) and his Grandpa Joe (David Kelly) as they join a small group of contest winners who get to tour the magical and mysterious factory of eccentric candy maker Willy Wonka (Johnny Depp). Critics Consensus

Closer to the source material than 1971's Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is for people who like their Chocolate visually appealing and dark.

Ryan Gilbey Sight & Sound If anything cramps Depp, and the film's sense of fun, it is the weight that is placed on reconciliation between Wonka and his father. Sep 28, 2006 Full Review Ken Tucker New York Magazine/Vulture As the star who's framed in the center of nearly every shot he's in, Depp is a constantly surprising Willy Wonka. May 12, 2006 Full Review Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald Finally a worthy, excellent remake. Jan 17, 2006 Full Review Jana Monji Age of the Geek While Wilder's Wonka had the pensive perfume of bittersweet chocolate, Depp's Wonka is that weird white chocolate--not really what you have in mind when you want to eat chocolate but can be an acquired taste and definitely part of the culinary craft. Rated: 3/5 Dec 27, 2023 Full Review Joe Lipsett Hazel & Katniss & Harry & Starr Podcast Credit Burton for going the practical route; it visually grounds the otherwise fantastical film. Surprisingly Depp's unhinged and frequently bizarre performance works more often than not. Rated: 3.5/5 Dec 12, 2023 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand ... for all of the flights of fantasy, Burton never quite finds the heartbeat that warmed the original classic with Gene Wilder, partly because this Willy Wonka is so disconnected and distracted, unable to relate to anyone... João Vinícius A It's not good, it's not funny, it's not many things it could have been, but the duo Freddie and Johnny charm anyone who is expecting the most from it. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/20/25 Full Review Susana P Charlie and the chocolate factory is a great book but the movie is a little too crazy. I would recommend it for seven year olds and up because I feel like there’s a lot of like scares for the Young‘s. It is like when the rich girl fell in that hole or when violet turned into a blueberry, I think like three year olds, would say I am scared. Maybe I turn into a blueberry if I eat gum or I’m not gonna touch squirrels or I might not feed a squirrel or I’m not gonna drown I never gonna go in the ocean because they’re scared of the when Augustus glue fell into the chocolate water or they’re scared if they shrink because they think they’re shrink at night so they get scared if they might Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/19/25 Full Review Kevinator B I LOVED IT I really hope they make a part 2 my second most favorite movie ever no exception I love all the scenes and I like the history of wonka and I like the blueberry scene and also it’s just fantastic it’s suck a good classic you can’t go wrong with a classic 5 out of 5 no exception fantastic movie Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/19/25 Full Review Audience Member I never cried so much while watching a movie. This movie is a masterpiece! It’s so emotional and warm. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/09/25 Full Review Brad S. R Pretty damned pointless. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/26/25 Full Review Quinoa A There is a lot of standing and looking around. They take turns to talk. Kids don't really react like kids, they just look bored and underwhelmed by factory and everything. Being turned into candy is a mild inconvenience. Vibes are off and muted like the colors. Also those gobstoppers would break your jaw and choke a kid to death. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/19/25 Full Review Read all reviews
