Chevalier Reviews

Jul 4, 2024

While Chevalier began with promise, the story descended into thinly written melodrama. Still worth watching if you love classical music, French history/culture, and/or for the quality of acting of the leading actor and the actress who plays Queen Marie Antoinette.

Chevalier is a must watch. It’s a well written story based on the the life of composer Joseph Bologne. They did a great job keeping the plot enjoyable while also sticking to the source material and keeping it authentic to the times.

Beautifully filmed, emotional, inspiring and a fascinating glimpse at a piece of almost lost history.

Beautiful costumes and sets for a very fictional delivery of Joseph Bologna’s life - This movie is fairly entertaining; the opening scene especially so, and yup: fiction. I’m not sure why so much of the Chevalier de Saint George’s life story was replaced by fiction. He led a fascinating life! There’s no need to give it the Bridgerton treatment or to make up discrimination faced or rivals vs. friends. It’s understandable that events will be left out, characters may be combined, because movies have limited time to tell stories (even the 3 hour films have a limit 😎). I’m hoping that a better director - Ava Durvernay perhaps - will produce a better version in the future.

A tour de force from KH Jr., with nothing less than impressive performances from the stellar cast as a whole. This not-quite-a-Biopic Drama is beautifully crafted, and showcases true musical talent in Pre-Raphaelite France, with aplomb and finesse redolent of the period. I've read a number of reviews downgrading the movie on the basis that it focuses too much on his relationship and affair with Marquise de Montalambert, but I feel this is unfair. The emotions, political climate and associated unrest, and the cultural bearings of the time all give depth to Joseph Bologne - Chevalier de Saint-Georges, and viewing the aforementioned through the lens of love (especially forbidden love) allows for the exploration of feelings, discrimination, injustice, and humanity whilst building an understanding of the creative talents he possesses. This warrants a sequel, for sure, as there is so much more of his life and experience that come after this movie ends

Very underrated movie.

Entertaining but you wonder throughout how much of this is accurate. It has a soap opera feel and the actors are not at all very French. Slow in the middle and too fast at the end, this is not horrible, but don't be confused that you are watching Amadeus, which was a masterpiece.

Chevalier is a very well written dramatic biopic that captures the true story behind one of the first known classical musical composers of African descent named Joseph Bologne. The movie stars Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Joseph, Samara Weaving as Marie-Josephine and Lucy Boynton as Marie Antoinette. The acting done by these three actors alone was soo amazing. The chemistry between Kelvin and Samara felt so real and then when things take a turn, the drama and the suspense to it all feels so real and natural. Boynton as the Queen of France is really powerful with her performance and the scenes between her and Harrison were intense and perfect in every way. I was interested in this movie from when I first saw the trailer in theatres and I was worried this movie was going to be mediocre and not be anything special but I'm glad I was wrong. The way that the story is told and unravels feels like a mystery almost because for so long, no one knew this man existed and he's said to be the most accomplished man in Europe from what I've read. It was truly just so interesting and fascinating to see how much he worked and how he stood up for himself despite everyone close to him turning their backs and betraying him. This story is powerful, heartfelt, heartbreaking, and this movie in general I feel like should've made a bigger reach. The movie also didn't feel that long and kept me invested all throughout. Overall, Chevalier is probably one of the most underappreciated and underviewed movies of this year as the story that is told is real, powerful, and is definitely an inspiring one that stays fascinating, builds on the intense drama, and the performances are so incredible. Chevalier gets a B+.

Predictable plot with banal dialogue, all supposed to be so relevant to contemporary issues applied to a phoney historical background Yawn.

A grand picture of a fascinating story that I had no knowledge of. As with any historical film it probably doesn't even scratch the full story of this incredibly talented man, but it gives me a starting point to discover more about him.

An entertaining film and decent introduction to Joseph Bologne. His character could have been developed and depicted further, the second half of the film felt slow. Overall I enjoy it.

I was kind of interested going into this film. I think I can speak for many when I say, though this is based on a true story, I had never heard of this person before in history. And, I can safely say that, not only did I learn a lot of history from Chevalier, but it's also just a very well made film. The acting is good, the editing is sleek, the music is beautiful, and the costuming is fantastic. The film does feel very rushed at times, and that can lead to a lot of exposition dumping and relationships that feel semi-hollow. But, overall, this is a very informative and entertaining film. I got everything that I expected, and what I expected and got was something not excellent, but still very good.
