Children of Men works on every level: as a violent chase thriller, a fantastical cautionary tale, and a sophisticated human drama about societies struggling to live.

Christopher Orr The Atlantic Children of Men founders in its latter moments -- not a lot, but enough. Its failure is less one of plot than of something deeper, a composing idea to undergird the plot. Apr 1, 2015 Full Review Ryan Gilbey New Statesman A film that has much to recommend it, not least the proof it offers, as if any more were needed, that Alfonso Cuarón is one of the most visually inspired directors working today. Apr 1, 2015 Full Review Anthony Quinn Independent (UK) Alfonso Cuaron stages some terrific set-pieces, and the production designers deserve credit for making London in 2027 look like the grunge capital of the world, ie, like now, only more so. One small problem: I didn't believe any of it. Rated: 3/5 Apr 1, 2015 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Children of Men is an achingly, almost dreamily optimistic film in the face of such brutally cynical conditions, offering a humanist message that neutralizes political debate. Rated: 4/4 Feb 12, 2022 Full Review Graeme Tuckett The Post NZ Cuaron takes this dense material and fashions an exceptional film. Jan 7, 2022 Full Review Jason Adams My New Plaid Pants Best Movie of the year. Cuaron just went to a whole new level with me. The class of filmmaking - the extended shots! those shots! my god! - here is astonishing. Rated: A Jul 6, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Benjamin H Under the stunning direction of Alfonso Cuaron, Children of Men is a beautifully shot (fantastic one-take action sequences), incredibly acted and layered thriller that is packed with emotional depth and continuous suspense. There were a couple of elements that could have been handled with a little bit more flair, but all in all this was a brilliant and hugely compelling film. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/21/25 Full Review Andy M What a complete waste of an evening. Loads of unanswered questions, starting with why there are no women in the whole world having babies, why everyone is killing each other at random, why the security forces just let a woman with a “miraculously new born baby” continue to walk out into the killing fields of battle rather than offering her protection, why terrorists want a baby anyhow, what they will do with it, what is the British government position to create this mayhem, etc… No logic to the plot, ridiculous, confusing and conflicting storylines, an unfulfilled ending, a poor script, bad acting… I could go on and on. If you want to watch this type of storyline with a far more convincing cast, just watch the daily world news. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/18/25 Full Review David M Alfonso Cuaron's dytopian vision of a world where women have stopped getting pregnant, and society is falling into despair in the absence of hope for the future, has lost none of its power from its original release - and is perhaps rightly now regarded as one of the best films of its era. That it manages to be so prescient, so unflinchingly clear-eyed about the mess we're in, and still provide some genuine hope is remarkable. Clive Owen is exceptional as the central character who does very little that's concrete, but still manages to bear witness to something miraculous; the cinematography is stunning throughout, and the action scenes presented with powerful deftness. And it doesn't hang about either, with a running time that manages to pack so much in and never feel rushed. Truly standing the test of time nearly twenty years on, this looks set to remain one for future generations to revisit and mine for inspiration and insight. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/13/25 Full Review Landon J Entertaining to say the least. Decent little apocalyptic action, fettered by some goofy plot choices and cookie cutter tropes. Walks the line between second rate second rate "time killer", and a just fine Sunday night movie. Points for set pieces, atmosphere, and good acting. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/12/25 Full Review Audience Member This is an over 92% film anyday, absolutely genius I still don't no how Alfonso did alot of it, is like Terminator 2 for me for the greatest of all time. 2 do this & pans labyrinth god he is film making genius,, the Tension, the intensity, the message in this film are magnificent also and his lovely directing where he gets all characters in shot but through stuff like Windows or broken windows etc, and just makes everything so realistic is like your there,, mind blowingly good,, so pleased he got awesome Clive after another 1 of me favs the epic Sin City, & Michael Caine, the caster was a legend also & the photographer, music producer etc, yeah I'm so happy we have directors like this as god some of the films out now are absolutely diabolical, the guest & copshop to name 2 and this website rated them highly, is diabolical, the guest they gave the same as this I think 92% lol, joke, they have nothing except violence is so sad as the planets getting way way more violent, we need more epic films from Alfonso & the other best to help people realise its not all about violence its about everything else 😀 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/30/25 Full Review Islam H The cinematography was amazing throughout, can see how this was a masterpiece for its time. The premise of the story is intriguing but feel as if it fell flat a bit. Overall still a great movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/20/25 Full Review Read all reviews
