Variety Staff Variety Tamara Dobson makes a smart starring debut, after fashion model and teleblurb work, as the title character, a sophisticated undercover agent working to stamp out the world drug trade. May 21, 2020 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times The movie is put together in a sort of disjointed way; there are too many characters, and some of them disappear for so long, we forget them. But that doesn't matter much. Rated: 2.5/4 Oct 23, 2004 Full Review Frederick I. Douglas Baltimore Afro-American It is particularly interesting because of the positive image conveyed about Black women. Feb 3, 2022 Full Review Jeanne Córdova The Lesbian Tide Take your $3.00 and go buy some sticks and poster board and stand outside and picket. That's the only potentially feminist contribution of Cleopatra Jones. Aug 23, 2019 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Revelatory not only as a black film but also as a feminist feature. Rated: 3/4 Apr 16, 2019 Full Review Dennis Schwartz Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews Plenty of low brow humor. Rated: B- Jul 11, 2015 Full Review Read all reviews

Blu B It's so close to 4 for me but man it just runs out of energy at the end. The music as you'd expect is great and one of the best things. It's a shame they don't use it as much in the second half. The cinematography is good too. The settings are memorable, it's colorful, the car chase is really good actually and very underrated, and the action overall is well done. Lots of practical work in this that holds up well. Everything else isn't bad here. Winter and Dobson are great. They're over the top, campy, but also cool. In other words they got the memo of what kind of flick their in lol. Everyone else isn't bad but are more on the campy/cheesy side. The lines can be very corny one liner type of stuff and sometimes it works and others it doesn't. No one though is as cool at balancing it as Dobson. You know plot wise you think this is gonna be a over the top Bond movie kind of plot but it turns into a gritty grounded drug crime action flick kind of like Shaft but more action. The actual plot is a bit jumpy, convuluted at times, but it can be followed enough and for the most parts hits the beats you'd expect. The biggest problem I'd say is as it goes on there is less of Winters as the villian until the end. It just isn't as entertaining when she's not in it. This needed more of Winters vs Dobson. As is if your a fan of Blaxploitation or any actors in this than maybe give this a try. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/16/25 Full Review CodyZamboni Movie is campy, goofy, and very tame for this kind of movie, Ms Jones is a super government agent who uses her martial arts skills to punish comical bad guys. Film has one cool action scene, the muscle car chase, and the subplot of racial injustice rings true. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Another one of the many blaxploitation flicks Starring Tamara Dobson as a special agent who's concerns center around drug interdiction She vows to bring down drug kingpin 'Mommy' who's framed her boyfriend Reuben 'Mommy' vows revenge for her poppy fields being destroyed so she hires her elite team of female henchmen to take out Cleopatra Cleopatra knows martial arts and a strong sense of will, powerful and assertive too Even her relationship at the time was a more progressive outlook at black men and women This is action, comedy, and spoof all into one Slick car chases, big gun fights, and an over the top performance by Shelley Winters as the villainess It's a shame though Cleo and 'Mommy' don't face each other until the very end But the film zips by with ease showing a tough black actress holding her own game much like Pam Grier's Foxxy Brown Very relevatory as a feminist feature and there's so many themes of sex, feminism, and race, it illustrates a lot of progress towards gender equality More black female presence in cinema such as this is always welcome Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/13/23 Full Review David K Feminist film? No way. I don't mean to be putting 2020's worldview on a film from 1973, but all they've done is make Cleo the brash-talking, jaw-snapping, sex toy that all men can't help but make a pass at. The acting is awful. And, they did all of this with much more of a budget than it warranted. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/09/23 Full Review Demented N Great movie great introduction to an amazing character a moment of history captured beautiful. The producer of this movie was going to have his wife his wife and it up starring in velvet smooth check it out it's terrible Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/14/22 Full Review Audience Member Entertaining blaxpoitation film with some tremendous assets: a confident heroine, some amazing dialogue, and Shelley Winters (!!!!) as the big bad - a drug kingpin named "Mommy" (!!!!!!). Fun stuff. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Read all reviews
