Compelling showcase for Elliot Page that feels triumphant over his natural, personally experienced edge to solidify the improvised commentary, which the atmosphere feels ideally awkward and yielded till the erupted drama implies unseen possibility left unsatisfyingly unresolved. That may be intended, if so then the rest of the culminated energy is considerably uneven, but that could be conflicting when viewing this inexperienced or uninvolved enough to properly grasp. Simply put, Page’s may have independently found emotional bliss in his passion project, it’s the story that’s incomplete amidst misled direction. (B-)
I’m so glad I was patient with this film. In the end, I found it poignant and several performances, especially Page, Baack, and Crewson, were deep and layered. This isn’t a perfect film. The beginning was the most challenging for me, not so much because of slow pacing, but because the film felt unsure of itself and a bit awkward. Like it was a documentary. By the end, I was in tears and so appreciative of the journey.
Totally Boring. About a subject I could care less about.
This film is unusual in style and pace, which might initially be off-putting to some viewers. However, it's naturalistic approach makes it profoundly relatable, especially for those of us who have experienced things not-so-different than Page's character. For those who can resonate with those experiences, this film will be an affirming of the struggles and the hope. For those who cannot, it is an opportunity to empathize and understand in a new and beautiful way.
At its heart, CLOSE TO YOU tells a story that resonates with many—reckoning with past struggles—but more importantly, the film carries significant weight for both LGBTQIA+ rights and Page himself, with his deep involvement and clear influence in shaping the narrative impossible to ignore.
Honest and emotional.
Wow, love this incredible film! I liked that not everyone was polished perfect like they do in so many movies. Humans are so flawed. You really see the raw beauty, hardship, bravery, brutality of some and love. I did find the music they played throughout the movie hard to listen too. The acting was superb and the story telling was masterful.
Great film and Elliot Page acting is SUPERB!!! He is amazing!!!
I may have gone into the film with too many preconceived ideas, expecting far too much. What I encountered was a movie filled with anger and frustration, eager to strike at sensitive points and reflect them back to the audience like a mirror. From the opening scene, it was clear this was going to be a bleak journey—and it was, without a single twist or hardly a glimmer of hope. There was no hint of love or optimism for what might lie ahead. The acting, however, was excellent, and I raise my glass to the cast for their stellar performances. But the story itself felt like a dark tunnel leading straight to 'Nowhere-land'.
The actors do their best (and there best is great) but the lack of script makes it drag a bit.
Welcome back to the big screen Elliot Page. What a triumph to see him in the way he wants to be in a role about the same. Family is tough for a lot of is for many different reasons. Family will never really let you escape who you were. Everyone is committed to the same history and being frozen in time. Hillary Baack is amazing too. Her character Kat is genuinely happy to meet Sam how he is now, with no expectations of who he was nor who they were in high school Beautiful story.
Honest and real from start to finish. This film isn't for spectators looking to be passively entertained. It's for viewers brave enough to plunge headfirst into the rawest of emotions and enmesh themselves in the discomfort that's invoked. There's quite a bit of subtlety and nuance that may be lost on some, but for me, the most valuable takeaways came from points in the film where there was no need for dialogue. It reminds you how even the quietest walks home can be the loudest. If you let it, the film speaks to you via sensations in the body like that all-too-familiar heavy knot sinking in your gut, or the sharp spike in heartrate that only the sting of deep disappointment can bring. This film invites you to merge with the lead character and see the world through their unique perspective. Despite being from a different end of the spectrum or walk of life than the person on-screen, I found myself capable of understanding the unspoken contents of their mind and relating to the emotions they were struggling to process or repress. Somewhere in this, I found my perspective shifted and a mirror had been placed in front of me and I could not look away. Elliot's performance made this possible. He brings an unparalleled authenticity that's like an outpouring of the most private and sacred parts of himself, willing to put it all on display because it's important. This film has a power that shouldn't be undervalued or dismissed.
Such a raw and honest film and makes you sit in all the messiness of it. I wish there had been more time on the family because I was confused sometimes about who someone was, but that barely took away from the emotional arc for me. Well acted, well shot, and a haunting piano refrain in the score.
Valid performances with a worthwhile message, although somewhat predictable and contrived. Still, an important film for our time.
What an incredible script, absolutely love this movie! So many scenes felt raw and natural, and Elliot Page looked amazing🥺
Thoughtful, arty, illuminating.
