The Cocoanuts Reviews

Jan 19, 2025

Every time I watch this movie - and I've seen it a dozen times or more - it always gets me. The routines never tire. The dialogue never stales. The interweaving of folly and formalities never loses its freshness and constant surprise. As a 'film record' of what a 1920s stage musical comedy was like, it's hard to beat and is best understood on those terms: the great boon here being that we get up close to the action. Despite all the technical limitations still thwarting camera freedom at the time, the direction and editing go a long way to make us forget them.

1st (I think) Marx bros. movie. They were doing it on stage beforehand. We see many of the sight gags and hear their particular type of play on words humor that would become staples in their brilliant careers. Margaret Dumon plays a wealthy widow, of course. Where did they get those dresses? And the condom hats? It has a few dance numbers with a chorus line type group of ladies, which I could with less of. And what is up with all the men in these movies with that same high-pitched, tra-la-la affected singing style? But it's funny enough for such an early theatrical version of their act. 3.2 stars

Not one of their best but the Marx are always fun.

The Marx Brothers' first movie. Still hilarious.

Another wildly entertaining Marx Brothers movie.

Definitely a clunky earlier Marx brothers effort (their first film I believe). It has its moments, but you can really tell this was basically a filmed stage-play and variety act. Still, interesting to see the Brothers Marx and Margaret Dumont taking on roles that will be played to much greater comic effect in later pictures.

The best comedy movie ever made!

The Marx Brothers are in expectedly solid form and it's a joy when they're onscreen. However, the extended musical numbers bog down the movie's pacing and distract from the better aspects of the movie.

The Cocoanuts is (expectedly) at its best when the Marx brothers are on screen and although the movie occasionally gets side-tracked with extended musical numbers, it's sure to appease fans of the ever-hilarious brothers.

Weird that I had never seen this. Anyways, the Marx brothers first feature proved they had a bit of a ways to go before they would sit on the mantle of whatever mantle they were going to sit on. Here, Groucho is the proprietor of a failing resort, Zeppo his assistant, and yes, Harpo and Chico as con men. Usual routines abound. Harpo being lecherous, Chico getting good lines, and Groucho chasing Margaret Dumont around. Yes, there is a piano and harp solo too. Oh, and too much more singing then there should be in a movie like this.

The first feature from the Marx Brothers that suffers drastically from weak direction & stagy numbers. The plot of Florida Lamdowners is backseat to comics gags & overlong musical numbers. Had a few cute moments but no means the quality of the later films. Rather weak & bland unfortunately.

An ancient comedy cinema treasure

It's fabulous...something really magical about it..

Good first full feature, but it does get better from the wacky brothers. This one is quite pacy to begin with, but is a little laborious in its second part when the jokes start to thin out.

The first. Filled with mmortal promise, but the direction can't quite keep pace with rapid-fire comedy of the Marxes. Scene transitions lag, but every scene has a load of laughs.

just about as good as it gets for pre-code marx brothers

The Cocoanuts has plenty of hilarious zingers and routines, the problem is slow delivery coupled by the troubles of being an early talkie, not to mention a thin plot. Still, if you fast forward through the musical numbers, this should prove more than worth your time.

Not as smooth or slick, but it was their first, so you can't expect too much, but it was quite funny watching the bro's play off each other. Too much extra stuff, not enough Bro's. Still, great energy and gags.

The first groundbreaking Marx brothers mayhem.

Aug 3, 2014

This is the Marx Brothers' first feature length film. Like with all Marx Brothers movies, the plot merely serves as a platform on which the Marx Brothers do their schtick. Only this time around (well, first time around), the plot got too much in the way and it's kind of lame. This movie is not as fantastic as their subsequent works where they perfected how they do their brand of comed on-screen but it still has some good laughs and quite a few good bits. It's far from their best but Marx Brothers completists and fans will find something more than worth their while.
