Cold in July Reviews
A well balanced movie making you wonder what is the next move and and to have to protect your family i jumps through rings of fire basically a really good movie.
Not sure how I missed this movie for 10 years, but saw it on Paramount and gave it a go. Woah. What a good, atmospheric, well paced thriller. It starts off on a revenge type path that seems basic in approach and quickly pivots to a mystery/thriller ride to a who done it and why type flick, and then again it slightly takes a dirt road to 8MM (the Nicholas Cage/Joquin Phoenix flick) territory. Absolutely recommend it for fans of 90s/early 00’s type thrillers.
What an amazing thrill ride. It keeps you on edge from start to finish. The acting from all was FABULOUS! Loved it!😎😁😀💞
Stick with it and ot just so otiginal and atmospheric and memorable.
A hard R for violence. A truly gripping story. Can't go wrong with Don Johnson and Sam Shepard. Surprised me that Michael C. Hall could fit in well with these two icons!
I've seen a number of movies like this but this had an interesting twist. The criminal activity in this was so dark. MC Hall should have fired his hair stylist as the short mullet was not at all flattering.
No one talks about this film, why? It's absolute class.....
The story is good, and so is the cast and the soundtrack, but many of the scenes are set in dark locations, and/or at night, so it is often quite difficult to see what's going on. I know it's supposed to be atmospheric, but I really want to see the action as well.
I've seen a lotta movies over the years & never has one turned out more-the-opposite of what you think it will be than this. I'm rarely surprised by twists but I confess this one was satisfyingly caught me off guard. Tangentially, also proof that a mid-80s mullet & wispy ‘stache looks good on exactly no one - an interesting way to make C. Michael Hall look arguably his most hapless, if well-meaning. Star Trek references: 0.5 - the mailman looks a lot like Rene Auberjonois.
You would think a man being hunted by the father of the man he killed in a home invasion would be a focal point of the story.... oh no this movie is so much more intriguing and darker then it appears.
it was better then expected and Micheal C Hall, delivers as usual, (what a great actor he is, and so underrated) and Don Johnson is really good in this but Rockwell as the tormented dad is really a magnet to watch
Tense and convincing suspense thriller with a 80's - 90' retro feel to it that develops into a dark mystery. Fans of vigilante justice films, as well as others, should be able to enjoy it.
Messy through and through. The plot just seemed unoriginal, nonsensical, and foreseeable, with the silly stalking, dirty cops, quick personality change of the main character, the fact the cops and family weren't concerned about the missing prisoner and main character, and the obvious ending. The mix of characters allowed for an interesting dynamic but not a lot was said about any of them in the grand scheme of things, and the main character was especially bland and not particularly likeable. The pacing was strange because the two halves were completely different, with the middle portion slowing down. The action was mostly silly and lacking at the beginning. However, the acting was good, the final shootout was more entertaining, and the cinematography, visual effects, and sets/props/costumes were decent. The soundtrack hasn't stuck in my mind, but it did fit the film.
A taut little noir chock full of excellent performances. For hard boiled viewers .
Pretty well directed, but what a loosy script! It plays like they were deliberately and painstakingly going over each and every plot point from the novel and rewriting it so that it no longer made sense. Read Joe R. Lansdale's novel instead
A film with many flaws that plods along with almost enough conviction to overcome them. I couldn't quite get into Michael C. Hall's performance after having him defined as Dexter. Don Johnson is probably the bright spark. The reversal of the story from its setup as a suspenseful, illogical, campy thriller to more of a serious slow burn made for a strange turn, but certainly a unique one. In the end, the narrative becomes too unfocused and the script unforthcoming to extract much enjoyment as things chug along.
What... was this? It ended with a major loose end untied with the unknown corpse still unidentified. And we find out there isn't even a close bond between the supposed father and son. So there really isn't any reason for this movie to happen in the first place!
Decent and interesting, but also hit-and-miss. It's got a few good qualities, like some moments which are quite suspenseful, the film is good enough at wrapping up tension. I also liked the late 1980s, Southern setting. This is like a film-noir, crime pic, but with rednecks. The atmosphere is good. It's got a great soundtrack, and a great cast. Michael C. Hall, Don Johnson and Sam Shepard constitute a strong male trio. But unfortunately, it's like the movie changes tones a lot. While some moments are quite good and quite gripping, others just feel empty and shallow. Cold in July is an uneven movie. But overall, it was still an interesting and completely watchable crime movie. While I think that it could've used some extra elements and substance, I recommend it to genre fans, so they can make up an opinion of there own on this film!!
You know when you start to watch a movie and have no idea what it is about, and then you love it. That is this movie for me. Don Johnson is really funny and lovable in a tense movie.
