Colma: The Musical Reviews
An independent film, that feels like a student film because of the young actors, and the sound & camera quality, but it's still fun, in its angsty coming of age way.
Some fairly stilted acting, especially from the two male leads, make this effort less likeable than it thinks it is.
This movie is pretty cute. It doesn't have as catchy and memorable songs as "Fruit Fly" but it's still a funny musical that deserves more recognition!
Well, I applaud their efforts at this musical film. The songs were good, the story was good, the acting was awful! I understand that this is an independent film though, so again, I applaud the outcome. This is also probably the most true to life movie/musical I have ever seen. The language, the situation, the friends... it was all very relatable to real life.
This was a really well done musical. I liked the characters, it was shot well and the songs helped move the story along rather than slow it down or hold it back. The boys are cute (even thought the lead isn't a very good singer), but the story and songs are well worth it.
One of the most unique musicals I've seen in a long time, about the most unlikely of suburbs. If you live in the SF area or just a fan of musicals, check it out..
It's indie, and a musical.. strange combination, with a lovely outcome. I found it funny and enjoyable for a "rainy-day" movie
Even if the songs were pretty catchy, the writing just seemed way off for me. Couldn't really get into it.
Compare this with other films about being a teen, and few match this level of happy, resourceful creativity and unforced diversity.
Incredible. Very real and impressively acted. The characters were so dramatically developed, they were easy to sympathize with.
Smart and real, full of fantastic songs that (mostly) feel less from a musical, and more from a Magnetic Fields or They Might Be Giants album. Director Richard Wong also proves the age-old fact that you don't need a huge budget to make your movie look professional...you just need to know how to SHOOT a goddamn scene. Just lovely.
Incredibly low budget film that teeters between interesting and lame, good and bad. I could never really tell whether I liked this film or not.
I happen to catch this musical on the Sundance channel and it was a delightful surprise. I, especially, enjoyed Mendoza's songs. The film's style is reminiscent of the french musicals, THE UMBRELLA'S OF CHERBOURG and LOVE SONGS. It almost falls apart during the climatic scene which takes place in a small regional theatre. However, the film redeems itself rather quickly. check it out!
Probably the most independent film i've ever seen (besides maybe "War Eagle, Arkansas"), and there are flaws in that realm (awkward timing, slow production, fake-looking "beat ups", and more), and none of the singing is spot-on. However, this is obviously written and directed with great heart, the songs are rather catchy (if unprofessional sounding), and the story is one a high school senior like myself can and does relate to. H.P. Mendoza has written something here that would undoubtedly work better on stage, but he gives a great performance and an absolute STAR is found within L.A. Renigen (Maribel) who seems all too ready for any acting job there could be---Broadway, film, book readings, ANYTHING. She's beautiful, an amazing actress, and has a huge career ahead of her.
This is what an indie movie is all about, and the fact that I grew up seeing alot of Colma makes it all the more enjoyable. What's so nice is that despite it being very clear that this was an indie movie, very low budget, the cast and crew really push as far as they can to make the movie as good as it can be, and they definitely succeed. Living in the Bay Area, Colma in particular, will definitely help one enjoy this movie alot more, but I'd like to think that those not from the area would find it enlightening. The actors all do a great job at portraying very real, relatable characters. I could name each one of those characters in someone I know in my own real life. To top it all off, the music is highly entertaining. Alot of people seemed to have issues with the keys the songs were done in, but it really didn't bother me because of how damn enjoyable many of the numbers were. This movie is alot of fun, very well done, and a great example of how you can find quality films that aren't big budget studio franchises.
I watched this film only because I worked in Colma for three weeks. It was pretty much a standard angsty film school piece dealing with the struggles of burgeoning adulthood (one of my faves, but still, mlech). The music was fun and I was impressed that the young cast and crew could pull it all together.
