Congo Reviews

Apr 28, 2025

Highlights: "The Lion King" opening creepy tickle-me Amy Tim Curry's accent (and scarf) Herkermer Homolka eating cake – military guy: STOP EATING MY SESAME CAKE!! 😡 Laura Linney casually shooting down rockets with a gun Gorilla parachuting "California Dreaming" sing-a-long a lot of gorilla carnage Laura Linney exploding a satellite via diamond laser power, only using the satellite's phone number 🤷🏼‍♂️ -- I'll give it that: "Congo" is much more fun (and shorter) to watch than "The Lost World: Jurassic Park". Cheesy/insane jungle adventure extravaganza!

This is not a great film by any stretch of the imagination, but there are enough quirky characters, humor, adventure, and surprisingly exciting action to make this very '90s techno thriller worth the watch—you just have to embrace the absurdity a little.

As a kid who enjoyed the novel, I was pumped that they were going to make a film adaptation. Then it came out and it became a running joke amongst me and my friends. I’m sure if I watched it again as an adult, I’d still be disappointed. I think I really only enjoyed the scene where the motion sensor machine guns start going haywire.

Fun movie, the scenery that is supposed to be the Congo which is actually Belize is absolutely stunning. It's a neat fantasy movie. The acting is a great with Ernie and questionable with others but you can say the same for almost any movie nowadays.

"Congo" has an infamous reputation as a train wreck of a movie. I went in knowing the movie was likely going to be awful but was sadly surprised that it wasn't the over the top enjoyable bad I was looking for. The movie makes the unforgivable sin of introducing Bruce Campbell, only to do nothing with his character. Throughout the movie, I kept thinking, where's Bruce? But they helped make up for it by include Ernie Hudson and Tim Curry. Tim Curry is an absolute delight, he steals every scene he is in. He is speaking in a crazy accent, rambling off nonsense and is obsessed with diamonds. He helps make this movie memorable. Stan Winston does the costumes in this movie. And yes, it is obvious that they are not actual gorillas they are just people in suits. It can take you out of the scene every time they cut to these gorilla costumes. There is one character, who dies of fright in this movie. The actor that plays it, gives 110% to his performance. It is shot and delivered in such a way, that it is one of the most hilarious death scenes I've ever seen. Humor isn't what the director had in mind for the scene, but it is hilarious none the less. The rest of the movie is just your basic Jungle B-Movie affair. What makes the movie feel so hollow is by the end, I can't tell you a single thing any character learned or how any character changed. I guess Dr. Karen Ross learned her boss was a jerk, but that was painfully obvious to everyone. Everyone just went to the jungle, hi-jinx ensued, and then they leave. I think the reason it is looked back upon with such shame is because of all the wasted potential. As Bruce Campbell pointed out, on paper this movie has all the right ingredients. It has Jerry Goldsmith music, is has Stan Winston doing special effects, it has great actors and it is based on a Michael Creighton book. I'm sure producers thought after "Jurassic Park" was a big hit in '93, and Lion King's success in '94, they had a slam dunk with a Michael Creighton story based in Africa. But they were then disappointed once the box office rolled in, and audiences were disappointed when all they got was "Congo".

Pure nostalgia. Talking gorillas, lost temple ruins, lasers, diamonds, violent gorilla gangs, lava - everything you could want from an action movie.

This movie is bad in all the best ways, it takes me back to a less discerning thirteen year old me who adored it. Highly recommend for the 90s nostalgia

Campy and dumb but also kind of enjoyable.

Enormously dumb and yet it does have a certain enduring appeal in how it reworked "King Solomon's Mines" for the 1990s. Also Laura Linney uses a diamond powered laser gun in one scene, which is why we go to the movies.

One of my favorite films from my childhood. Just pure entertaining fun.

An underrated dark comedy adventure film that deals with a lost city and man killing apes.....a guilty pleasure film for me and IM PROUD OF IT.

The only thing good about it is how horrible it is. Hilariously pathetic from the beginning to end accompanied by actors butchering the human language with made-up accents that fluctuate and come and go from scene to scene. In all honestly, massive waste of money and energy.

Excellence in B-rate disaster films

The movie is very boring. A talking gorilla is pretty cool. I actually was about to shut the movie off cause it was that boring. Then all of a sudden the movie took a awesome turn at the end. It went from a family friendly boring movie to a horror show.

I liked when Amy the Gorilla called Laura Linney ugly.

Not Good but more disappointing than anything. This doesn't deserve to be included as one of the worst things ever made. Far From It. The acting is ok with some laziness and hit or miss dialogue. There really isn't that much charm or depth to any of the characters either but it was far from being bad. the cinematography is ok with some cool shots of the volcano and nothing out of place camera wise. The problem is the effects are not over the top or out of place. Everything just kind of blends in with the jungle setting. Also there are some dumb scenes like the flare guns and laser scene with the monkeys at the end. The gorilla effects of Amy though is solid though out of place at times. The music is ok and is generic and forgettable. The editing is not good. It feels like because this film has a very convoluted plot it feels like things just happen without any real flow to the story at times. Without the doubt the worst problem with this film is the BAD pacing. 80% of this film nothing really happens until the city is discovered. Once that happens it feels like the film goes over the top to make up for the slow pacing and it just feels like a big letdown. Honestly this has potential if it would've been a better paced film to be a decent adventure (Not saying this would've been a classic) but as is its a flawed subpar adventure film. I've seen a lot worse but skip this still.

Yes, 4 stars! The ultimate camp movie (not just because there are tents with air conditioning and rafting with Gorillas). Don't take this movie too seriously and you will have an enjoyable two hours (the people on screen sure seemed to give off that vibe).

I love this movie. Why? I don’t know. I just love it!

Not gonna ruin the movie, for those who havnt seen it, however its a really good movie with our own Tim curry in it. It gets bad ratings but it's a good entertaining film for the family.

Gorillas & CGs really need some pro touch to be a convincing adventure. Maybe way ahead its time robs the plot some credits.
