The Crazies Reviews

Feb 13, 2025

A good effort for a little Indie with reasonable acting. It split it's runtime between army HQ and the protagonists, which somewhat killed the tension. Also the movie didn't utilise it's concept in a clever way. For a movie called The Crazies I would have expected to see more... we'll... crazy.

THE CRAZIES grapples with its low-budget limitations, offering some chilling scenes that linger, though not quite enough to fully satisfy.

Probably Romero's most overlooked, yet, bleakest, disturbing, and misanthropic movie. While proper action from the titular "Crazies" is certainly lacking and to be desired; it's social commentary and political thriller aspects not only add up to a perfect story and script; but the raw-looking cinematography; fast-paced dynamic direction; awesome effects and production design with the special highlight of course going to the soldier's iconic white hazmat suits (which add up to this movie in more ways than one); realistic and three-dimensional characters, which makes you feel sympathetic even for the army men, something very rare that makes so you dont really root for their deaths, which was exactly what Romero tried and managed to achieve, yet, you also relate with and feel bad for the main charactera; all of this coupled up with realistic and bleak, yet exciting and beautifully shot action scenes makes "The Crazies" a near-perfect movie.

Ahead of its time, after the pandemic this brings our attention to how sometimes governments shouldn't rule private citizens life. Great Romero.

Okay... The Crazies was a classic back in its day, but now, sorry to say, it is a challenging watch. It has all the hallmarks of classic Romero, but it just has not aged well. I highly recommend the 2010 remake with Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell... a very fine remake, with the great man George A. Romero ensuring it is relatively faithful to the original, as an Executive Producer.

From the same mastermind behind Night of the Living Dead, the story leans more towards psychological horror. The scares are not recurring and it is dedicated to playing with the viewer's patience. It is not bad but it will be one of those that one hates to love or loves to hate.

Spoiler there's no zombie but is really bloody and really disturbing scenes since Vietnam War and really great writing and directing by Romero and amazing cinematography it really felt a documentary.

It's a fairly interesting (and timely) idea, A virus attacks a small town, and it's up to the grovernment to stop it without clarifying what it really is, and the small bands of townspeioke fighting to escape the forced quarantine. It does get bogged down by the repeated displays of beauracratic incompetence. I mean, we saw it one scene, we get it, but it just continues on during the length of the film, and also I am guessing the budget was low.. It just feels low, minimal special effects for this type of movie sort of dulls out the movie.

The premise and acting was good. Im afraid I couldn't finish this movie so I didnt get the the actual effects or real plot. I know, I know I shouldn't review a movie that I didnt finish but it is a chore to get past even 30 minutes of this. The Audio Quality was awful and I mean REAL awful I could hardly hear what the characters were saying and they had this weird sound that made it hard for us to hear anyone. Not to mention there was ALOT of filler. Maybe if I somehow finished this movie without going deaf I would like it IDK.

The Crazies is really a pandemic horror thriller of all time.

Aside the famed Dead trilogy, the other Romero efforts aren't that great. I found myself particularly bored by this one. The acting was pedestrian, there was hardly any action, too much dull exposition, and the sets weren't particularly great. The low budget shows. The remake is much better and more gripping and handles the similar social commentary this one clumsily tries to tackle much more effectively.

Ok but doesn't do anything creative like his zombie films.

Most of the acting is what you would expect from an old cheesy B-movie, but George A. Romero sure does know how to pace a film.

Evan City is a small town but it isn't long before chaos ensues A military plane carrying an experimental vaccine has crashed and has spread a deadly virus This disease not only causes insanity to whomever is exposed but also death; it mainly makes people kill those around them Now soldiers are sent in to contain the situation, however the citizens themselves are treated as second-class thereby creating an internal struggle to make it out before all of them are executed The narrative isn't exactly straightforward as it keeps cutting back and forth from the soldiers rounding everyone up to the small group trying to make it out It's good they waste no time getting to the point but you don't feel as connected to the situation going on You go from scene to scene to scene without any sense of fear or worry The film rarely takes a moment to breathe or to simmer down It's not one of Romero's best so maybe it'll work better for certain viewers in this scheme of horror filmmaking I will say it is scary to think that an entire population can be so out of control when an epidemic is involved

A movie that falls short to make an impact and that doesn't stand out in Romero's filmography. Some interesting ideas not that well executed.

Once again Romero created a low budget, independent film about a small community thrown into chaos on account of military incompetence. Truly worth the watch, even if it lacks the quality that other Romero low budget films have, it still is able to convey the underlying messages it aim to show audiences.

Shocking and disturbing film it felt like it was real documentary and Romero has done it again to build intention and fear of the neighbors.

The Crazies is a dark, gritty examination of human nature under stress. Horror springs from several sources: the potentially apocalypctic scale of the disaster, the bloody clash between the townsfolk and dehumanized authority figures, the irrational behavior of the infected, and the panicked reactions of the supposedly sane. Shot on location in idyllic rural Pensylvania, the film strives for a realistic aesthetic and effectively uses military stock footage, carefully orchestrated postproduction sound and silence, and occasionally jarring editing to compensate for budgetary limitations and depict the chaos spawned by a horrific situation so plausible that is is barely science fiction.

The Crazies 1973 was action packed non - stop . I get where Romero was going. He never took his foot off the accelerator. The military drum cadence music was hilarious every time George A. Romero cut to scene's of the Big wig's of government power. The blood was a little on (pastel side). Over all I like it .

The new one is way better. This one is interesting like the new one, but it's way too all over the place.
