Cropsey Reviews
I'm so impressed with the level of research and skill that went into this horror documentary. It really covered all angles in a way that felt fair to all perspectives.
Don't waste your time, very bad true crime documentary and not scary whatsoever. The dude that was convicted got life based on some hunches or something, THERE WAS NO CREDIBLE EVIDENCE. This will make you mad just don't.
Trash. Literally zero evidence this guy did it. Literally nothing learned after the first minute and they feel like they have an ah hah! Shame on anyone fir putting this out. Worst doc I've ever wasted my time on.
Too often the filmmakers resort to cheap, manipulative, 48 hours-esque stylistic choices but they do manage to make disturbing connections between an urban legend of their childhood and the horrifying reality of a series of crimes in their neighborhood.
A documentary on a real-life boogeyman stemmed from urban legend roots speculatively seeded by the affecting community shows real-life horror with multi-layered uncertainty surrounding the patterns amidst declining presentation but not without provoking a difference in the thought process plus being nicely unfolded in a moderately captivating matter. This documentary is definitely something to watch when you're bored. I feel they could have done more with this film, maybe get more facts, seek out some answers to some obvious questions. One major question being who was this George guy that found a disturbed area during the first search for a child, he claims he saw it during the search but know one else did, why didn't he make people dig at that moment during the first search. He was so adamant about this area he saw with clay balls in the dirt indicating the area had been disturbed in some way which led them to search again and viola there was the body. Later on there is a hint that there was evidence that the body showed signs that it was moved to that spot. Was this George guy questioned?? Was DNA ever tested on the body that was found of the 12 year old? Did children stop coming up missing that fit the profile after Rand was arrested? Maybe another documentary can be done before this guy passes away that's a little more focused on hard evidence and not the urban legends, cults and bad witness statements.
Don't listen to all the positive reviews, they tricked me. Starts off interesting but then goes off the rails. It gets really slow and goes all over the place, becomes boring. Nothing is resolved by the end which makes the whole documentary pointless, a pointless watch. Don't watch, save your time, find something else to watch.
Bare bones, unflinching gaze into a deeply spooky, real world subject. Not super slick but deeply affecting. The filmmakers did a really solid job of outlining exactly what the title suggests.
The only bad things that can be said about this haunting, disturbing documentary are the main topics they address, showing it did it's Jonas any nonfiction work aspires.
not the best, only big boys should watch this one. there's some whacky imagery that spooked me straight and im pretty sure i saw a kid's butt in this documentary which was uncalled for. it didnt look professional. it could have been recorded on a nokia and it would have been the same quality. i appreciate the artistic vision but it wasn't the best true crime documentary out there and this made for a very awkward datenight with me and my spouse
Decent, but a little slow.
A great Film that has such a real story to tell. Don't make the mistake and not see this film.
3.5/5 Cropsey presents an investigation with plenty of highs and lows that affect the rhythm and understanding of the whole presentation, but the satisfyingly vague conclusion and the creepy realistic tone makes for a very compelling story.
An interesting documentary that leaves you wondering "what else is going on on Staten Island?" It's a fascinating watch from a group that really did their research. I was so disappointed that they couldn't get the interview/that it feel through. Worth a watch but it wouldn't be at the top of my list for movies I want to see.
A chillingly effective documentary. A documentary that delves into what happens when the ghost stories you told as kids, the stuff of urban legends, seem to come true. Begins as the documentation of a terrible legend, but evolves into a true story of a monster, and that's what makes Cropsey downright frightening. Cropsey is a creepy documentary with all the elements of a horror film about a demented serial killer, and an extra ingredient: This one is real. Cropsey is compelling as a meditation on how we use stories to explain the inconceivable, and how if no story is handy, we take the available clues and make one up. The film is eerie and thought-provoking, raising worthwhile questions about the pursuit of justice without losing compassion for the victims or their families. Whether they're interviewing so-called experts or casual observers -- or even reading from Rand's letters -- Zeman and Brancaccio confront fear, disappointment, and hope, again and again. The filmmakers overreach trying to explain the meaning of a community's revulsion and rush to judgment regarding the man convicted of one of the murders, but Cropsey still gets under your skin. It isn't a pleasant journey -- nor one that is likely to be soon forgotten -- though it is a sobering, skillfully produced reminder that sometimes fact can be far more terrifying than fiction. VERDICT: "High-Quality Stuff" - [Positive Reaction] This is a rating to a movie I view as very entertaining and well made, and definitely worth paying the full price at a theatre to see or own on DVD. It is not perfect, but it is definitely excellent. (Films that are rated 3.5 or 4 stars)
