Danny Deckchair Reviews
Pleasant little diversion with some sweet moments.

A pretty straightforward and competent little film.

The charm of it all wins us over, and while we watch the tired old twists and turns, we smile anyway.

[Jeff Balsmeyer's] playing it safe causes this beautiful opportunity of a film to crash just when it seems destined for the stratosphere.

In a sane world, this utterly charming, sweet little fantasy of a movie would boost Rhys Ifans to stardom.

One randomly recruited audience member directly behind me -- let's call him the Shouter -- exclaimed, 'That's tight!'

Too predictable to sustain interest.

Balsmeyer may remind you of the guy at the party who, after one too many shots, puts a lampshade on his head. It's funny for maybe a moment -- until you realize, to your horror, that he doesn't know when to stop.

The easygoing humor and uplifting messages -- that it's never too late to turn your life around -- are welcome, especially in the September movie doldrums.

A sort of children's book for adults.

This is a good one to catch and moves to a feel good ending.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Sep 14, 2004
Takes a good premise -- one that's based on real-life events -- and turns it into a tired and overly familiar sitcom.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Sep 10, 2004
Delivers the uncomfortably condescending message that these eccentric salt-of-the-earth folks ... need this Sydney slacker to tell them how good-hearted they are.

As for the charm factor, I can't think of any screen couple this year with more of such an elusive quality than Ms. Otto and Mr. Ifans.

Nothing more than the same rom-com clichs you've seen a thousand times.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Sep 9, 2004
Unlike its main character, it never quite achives lift-off, but it is a pleasant little diversion with some very sweet moments.

Nicely shot, quaintly romantic, it is tuned to the Australian taste in matey malarkey.

Like Danny, the movie seems up for anything, and that relaxed joie de vivre charms in the movie's second half.

Climbs to a magical high halfway through, then spends the rest of its time in an easy chair.
