Days of Heaven Reviews

Sep 12, 2024

Saw this on Criterion channel and didn't like it at all. The script is inert and Malick can't handle actors (how many times a day does the Richard Gere character shave?). The massive editing (cutting) prevents the rhythms of nature from coming through, and the clumsy close-ups of the characters look like insets, along with the nature creatures. The music is great (it must be borrowed by Harry Potter) and the cinematography/lighting is well-respected. I suppose it looks better on a big screen, and the blend of noise and silence might be artistic (the locust noises are cool) but I'm glad Malick doesn't make many movies.

One of the most beautiful films you'll see. The fire in the fields scene was amazing. Definitely holds up well, considering it's age. The only part I wasn't to happy about was the lackluster ending. Kind of ended on a weird note. Other than that the sets, costumes, music, and acting were all 10/10.

While the premise of the love triangle story is rather simple, the poetic and meditative approach is what sets it apart. Days of Heaven is not a film driven by plot, it avoids traditional narrative structures and opts instead for a dreamlike quality that invites viewers to immerse themselves in the world on screen with visual poetry that is unparalleled. Malick captures the vastness and beauty of the Texas Panhandle with breathtaking imagery, the golden fields of wheat, fiery sunsets, and imposing thunderstorms create a visual symphony that complements the film's emotional depth, it's an experience much more magical than a synopsis would ever allow.

I saw it last night at Music Box theater. It is a beautiful film to look at with a solid cast but the story is just lacking and the ending was so bad that I heard people laugh out loud. Good but not best ever film.

Another great and classic film.

My "memory" of having initially seen this decades ago, was a much stronger film than I see now. Beautiful cinematography, and some really impressive scenes of period mass-harvesting in the giant kerosene tracters era (heh, big hit for the small community of fans of old tractors and machinery [grin]). But the characters haven't aged well, and I now find pretty shallow and unengaging.

Dazzling in its visual elegance, 'Days of Heaven' stands as a cinematic masterpiece. Every frame is a work of art, a visual symphony that transcends dialogue. The film's portrayal of a dystopian dance between wealth and mortality invites viewers to ponder life's essential priorities. The narrative delicately explores the hardships of labor and the often-overlooked struggle for recognition. The cinematography is so expertly crafted that certain monologues resonate as if personally delivered. In the intersection of drama and romance, 'Days of Heaven' captivates as a favorite, skillfully concluding as it began. A harmonious blend of acting, storytelling, and cinematography renders this film a perfect example of why cinema remains an enduring passion. RIP Linda Manz

The strengths of this movie are that it is very beautiful with gorgeous scenery and a century-old world conjured out of wheat fields and a beautiful old mansion. The weaknesses are that the story is a bit slow and the characters, while driven by strong passions, are not characterized to the fullest extent. It's very cinematic, Biblical, and epic.

Terrence Malick writes and directs the late Sam Shepard, Richard Gere, and Brooke Adams Set during 1916 when America was booming thanks to the Industrial Revolution Bill a manual laborer kills his boss and ends up fleeing to the Texas Panhandle He brings his girlfriend Abby and daughter Linda A complicated love triangle ensues though when the farmer they end up working for fall in love with Abby Bill encourages her to marry him that way they can inherit the fortune but he has to remain silent about the scheme and can't be seen with her Malick shows his love for beauty in the landscapes and there's never a shot where you can admire the sunrise It almost looks like a nature documentary No one's perfect; you got half devil and half angel in you The characters aren't anything deep to write home about but the actors are charismatic enough The whole thing is like watching a poem come to life of a time and place long gone but some wish to return

One of my long time favorites.

Beautiful cinematography; a movie in which dialogue and non dialogue probably ( or at least feels that way) take the same amount of time. I guess the ability to capture the audience during the extensive non dialogue parts depends on how much one is drawn by the scenery and landscapes. There's an element of nostalgia -a past that's felt as such from the beginning through the voice of a narrator. A past in such men fought among themselves and even harder with nature ti tame it.

The best thing I can says about Days of Heaven is that there is no other movie that has ever made me feel the way this masterpiece does. It's the closest an old atheist like me has ever come to a spiritual experience. Definitely the kind of movie you either love or hate and I love it.

An All Time Classic. The acting was phenomenal but a bit slow to get invested fully into because of the extreme lack of dialogue besides voiceovers throughout the first half but the actors did such an amazing job with expressions and what lines they were given that it worked over time. The cinematography is the highlight, this is one of the most gorgeous films I have ever seen. Every shot looks like a painting. The music is very good but I wouldn't call it exactly catchy or memorable but definitely not generic. The editing is very well done. This is a very low key film for two thirds of the run time but does a phenomenal job in the third act ramping tension up and giving an excellent conclusion, making the investment of time 100% worth it. Everyone should give this a watch once.

Days of Heaven is a beautifully poetic and reflective film that is a pleasure to look at.

A stunning visual masterpiece. I was quite young when this hit the theaters originally, and it must have flown under the radar, but I'm so relieved I had a chance to experience it first hand. The creative team takes their time and makes the most of the medium - show don't tell.

Great soundtrack and beautiful shots. Story feels a bit boring at times, but the overall experience in visuals and music compensates for that.

Before disappearing from the world of movies for a couple of decades, Terrence Malick released what is probably his crowning achievement, 1978's Days of Heaven. Set in the Texas Panhandle in 1916, it follows the story of Bill (Richard Gere), his young sister (Linda Manz) and his girlfriend (Brooke Adams) as they pursue their version of the American Dream. The film is most notable for the Oscar-winning cinematography, bathing the land in a golden hue and effectively capturing the expansive vistas of the Texas landscape. It's fascinating to note the directorial styles and techniques that would make him the cinema auteur he would become in the second half of his lengthy career.

Terrance Mallick's Texas translates very well into Alberta's striking landscapes. His depiction of natural beauty gives perfect context for the lives and relationships of his characters. The rural landscape becomes one of his characters. He is also masterful at the use of the voice-over to provide further insights into the problematic relationships among Bill, Abby and The Farmer. I was struck by the beauty of this movie when I saw it while living in Alberta in 1979, and I am equally enamoured by it 42 years later.
