(CASTELLANO) Hay comedias que no necesitan grandes alardes para funcionar, y Un funeral de muerte es una de ellas. Con una premisa sencilla —un funeral familiar donde todo se desmadra—, Frank Oz consigue una película desenfadada, llena de enredos, equívocos y humor negrísimo, de ese que a veces se echa en falta. El guion avanza sin dar respiro, con escenas cada vez más locas pero bien medidas, y aunque roza el absurdo en varias ocasiones, sabe reírse de sí misma con elegancia.
El reparto está espléndido. Se nota que todos están pasándolo bien y eso se contagia. Cada personaje aporta lo suyo sin necesidad de ser una caricatura. Hay espacio para los gags físicos, el humor verbal y hasta momentos de pura mala leche, sin que la película pierda ritmo ni encanto. Además, la mezcla entre el estilo británico clásico y cierto desparpajo más universal le da un tono muy particular que funciona sorprendentemente bien.
Quizá no sea una obra maestra, pero Un funeral de muerte tiene chispa, buen ritmo y suficientes golpes de ingenio como para garantizar un rato divertido. Y que se haya prestado a varios remakes dice mucho: cuando algo funciona tan bien, es normal que muchos quieran copiarlo. Aquí, lo original sigue siendo lo mejor.
(ENGLISH) There are comedies that don’t need big gimmicks to work, and Death at a Funeral is one of them. With a simple premise —a family funeral where everything goes off the rails— Frank Oz delivers a lighthearted film full of mix-ups, misunderstandings, and pitch-black humor, the kind that’s often missing these days. The script moves quickly without pause, with increasingly absurd scenes that still feel well-timed, and though it skirts the edge of the ridiculous at times, it knows how to laugh at itself with class.
The cast is terrific. You can tell they’re all having fun, and that enjoyment is contagious. Each character brings something to the table without turning into a caricature. There’s room for physical gags, witty dialogue, and even a few moments of dark humor, all without losing pace or charm. Plus, the blend of classic British style with a more universal cheekiness gives it a unique tone that works surprisingly well.
It might not be a masterpiece, but Death at a Funeral has spark, rhythm, and enough clever touches to guarantee a good time. And the fact that it’s inspired several remakes says a lot —when something works this well, it's only natural others want to copy it. Here, the original still stands above the rest.

A classic British comedy movie which quickly became one of my favourite movies of all time. This hilarious, lightly emotional, great movie is an absolute must see.
Andy Nyman as Howard is one of the funniest roles and performances ever.
Alan Tudyk as Simon was hilarious and well played, he really made it impossible to not laugh with this movie.
And let's not forget Uncle Alfie played by Peter Vaughan who was so chaotic and funny I couldn't hold in my histerical laughter.
This really is a hilarious movie from start to finish.

This film doesn't start as farce: Matthew McFadyen's stiff-upper-lip grief could serve a more tragic narrative. But from the moment the wrong body is revealed (still as a subtle error), it's all down hill. The opening sequences, introducing the key characters getting to the funeral, not only sets up the farcical impact of cousin Troy-the-pharmacist's psychedelic drugs hidden in a valium bottle, but also parodies the opening structure of Four Weddings and a Funeral, from which this film surely derives its title. Each actor in the ensemble cast puts in a credible picture of their own character -- the talentless and envious Daniel; the self-regarding famous novelist Robert; cousin Martha and her ne'er-do-well brother Troy, both hoping to stay the right side of their irascible father, Victor; the oleaginous Justin, who can't imagine why Martha doesn't still fancy him; the brilliantly off-his-face Simon, Martha's finance; the hypochondriac Howard (another cousin); and of course the dead father's lover, Peter, and grumpy uncle Alfie. Farce derives from their confluence, with the misappropriated bottle of pills, plus the unanticipated appearance of Peter as the dead man's erstwhile lover. At the time of its release, the farce didn't seem snappy enough, but perhaps it works better if seen as somewhat generically mixed.
