Critics Consensus

Death Note benefits from director Adam Wingard's distinctive eye and a talented cast, but they aren't enough to overcome a fatally overcrowded canvas.

yuri s Cosa cazzo ho appena visto Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/23/25 Full Review Charlynn T As someone who really enjoyed the anime, this movie disappointed me every step of the way. Story line has changed, things were added and left out and none of the actors seem to match up with the characters. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/26/25 Full Review Piotr B OK, I understand that it is impossible to translate the plot of the anime into a 100 minute movie, but that doesn't change the fact that the film is spread out by the characters, or rather the misunderstanding of them, what was best in the anime was the duel between kira and L, who were some - in this movie they are just logs with the same names and that's it. You don't have to translate the plot literally (I would even be in favor of changing and shortening the plots), but if interesting characters have been replaced with idiots, nothing will help... To sum up + visually not bad -CHARACTERS!!!! -shallow dramaturgy -misrepresentation of RYJUKA - even the plots that were not in the anime, and appeared in the film, were not properly developed. If you watch anime - don't make mistake and don't watch it, if you dosen't watch anime- just watch to see haw really interesting and brilliant is "Death Note" becouse in this movie is less than 10 % oryginal Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/25/25 Full Review Diego B Shitty movie, it makes his own story but is too much of everything there nothing good except ryuk, william defoe peak actor Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/24/25 Full Review Filippos S I lost some precious time of my life. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/23/25 Full Review Audience Member Perfect example of how not to use IP… complete an utter waste of time. Even as an original story it makes no sense. Motivations are lacking, characters not developed, no cohesion in storytelling. It’s like a live action adaptation of a middle school play inspired by Death Note, but the play writer heard the plot from his friend who didn’t even finish the anime and was unaware there was even a manga.
