Dheepan Reviews
Audiard decides to have an action climax ala The Terminator rather than something more in line with the film as a whole. Unfortunately, once the climax ends, we are given one of the most beautifully-shot bad endings in the history of cinema.

A fascinating film that never judges its characters, including the duller ones that are just the product of the space they exist in. [Full review in Spanish]
| Original Score: 6/10 | Sep 2, 2022
Never one to shy away from controversial themes, Audiard here explores the predicament of a former Tamil fighter rebuilding his life in France.

Audiard's exceptional strength [as a filmmaker] and elegance remain intact...

Audiard manages to force viewers from so-called First World countries to empathize with those who seek asylum or wish for a better life, while also reminding us that many Western cities run rampant with crime and gun violence
| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Mar 11, 2022
A realistic drama that shows enormous sympathy for its downtrodden protagonists.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Nov 22, 2021
The actors are able to build up an incredible amount of empathy, despite being shown with flaws.

While Dheepan has elevated the international renown of Jacques Audiard, this familiar refugee saga is perhaps his least cohesively formulated melodrama to date.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Sep 9, 2020
Indeed, violence is everywhere and it does not suffice to merely say it. It must be experienced.
| Original Score: 3.5/4.0 | Sep 6, 2020
The subtlety of this tale of three Tamil refugees pretending to be a family to fit into a first-world society undoubtedly creates a very compelling dramatic pulse. [Full review in Spanish]

A drama with hints of thriller and a hopeful touch. [Full Review in Spanish]

Audiard's direction is masterful, but while the script is insightful in small doses, it fails to reach the peaks of drama and sorrow it gets so close to.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Apr 18, 2019
A film that shocks and whose visual language is so vivid, the images linger long after the credits have rolled.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Feb 22, 2019
The viewer is so deeply invested in these characters and in their successful transition into life in France that the dynamite conclusion is heightened to a fever pitch.
| Nov 13, 2018
The balance between social commentary and genre (there are some unbelievably gripping and suspenseful sequences) is well managed by Audiard at first.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Nov 4, 2018
Fnds resolution in a coda that turns maudlin thanks to an overblown music cue, but it's a minor flaw in an otherwise strong film.
| Aug 29, 2018
The characters are inflicted with a series of melodramatic turns that blatantly contrast the meager good times with the bad.
| Aug 23, 2018
Potential is a terrible thing to waste.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Nov 5, 2017
The final reel is violent, melodramatic and implausible.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Oct 24, 2017
The French critic Vincent Malausa recently assailed Dheepan as "arrogant and stupid." For some of us, it's merely banal and forgettable.
