Django Reviews

Mar 24, 2021

Speaking subjectively, a really poor effort. Every performance felt phoned in, the music felt misplaced for the era it represented, and the story was truly dull. The earnest desire to represent a colossal Romani figure in popular culture set against the backdrop of WWII makes it difficult to rate so low. It's just a shame that the characters are underdeveloped and the story half-baked. The romance plotline rings stale from the second scene, and leads approximately nowhere. Instead of an earnest view into the life of a great musician, we instead receive an excess of sullenly-delivered dialogue delivered by a seemingly half-asleep Reda Kateb. The musical segments are nice interludes at first, until one realises that the drum-heavy jazz featured is really quite far from most Django recordings available to listen online. Overall, quite misguided and very avoidable.

I thought this was a very well-done film. The acting from him and his mother but all the characters was very good. I don't understand the other reviews "its not like his music, so joyful and happy". Thats pretty much the point. There was a Romani holocaust and he managed (in part because of his talent) to escape it. I thought the ending of the film in the Church was very, very moving. Non- "gypsy" jazz for sure.

I know little about Django's life, but I found this to be a remarkable movie. I didn't go into it thinking it was deeply or accurately biographical. What counts and what makes it succeed, is the music, the well-reconstructed ambiance, and a credible sense of the dangers faced by this not-much talked-about minority. And it's a wonderful expression of the lifestyle of these folks. On top of it, the acting was terrific. Perhaps a deeper exploration of Django's inner life might have been of interest, but that wasn't the point of this film.

I thought the movie wonderful. If you are looking for a "fast-paced nasty Nazi overcome by Art and the power of love, Movie" this isn't it --- it's something else, and something better. Every character is played straight, with depth and nuance, and the personal ambiguities of Django as he comes to terms with his situation feels real. I came away more curious about Romani culture and even more fond of his music, if that could be possible. I'll be getting the DVD when it comes out.

If you are a fan of Django, then you will really enjoy this movie. If you are into music, then you will really enjoy this movie. If you are a movie critic and have none of the above attributes, then your life is missing something. I found this movie compelling, interesting and totally un-Hollywood.
