Donnie Brasco Reviews

Nov 3, 2024

Good old-fashioned character-driven crime drama.. the sort that are hardly made anymore.

I just love Al Pacino. An amazing mafia movie in the shadows of Goodfellas and the Godfather.

Based on a real life undercover cop, we follow Joe Pistone as he navigates his other persona of Donnie Brasco in the mafia underworld! Conflicted about his friendship with "Lefty" Ruggiero, his loyalty and his duty are thrown into disarray as he struggles to find an escape without being killed. Pulse-pounding in every scene and a sense of foreboding tragedy looms as the line between cop and criminal is extremely blurred!

Johnny Depp's second best performance after Ed Wood, but this may be Pacino's best work. He brings pathos to the table unlike in any other gangster film.

Filme clássico, com atores da old school do cinema norte-americano. Nem precisa acentuar o quanto esse filme te empolga do começo ao fim com traços de cinema com um roteiro bem elaborado.

Depp and Pacino. Need I say more

The relationship between Donnie and Lefty? "Forget about it!"

This one is a good mob flick. Pacino puts on a clinic, the only aspect i don't like is that it doesn't go into detail on how much Joe Pistone actually enjoyed being in the so called "mafia"

Average gangster movie with a conventional story. What makes it unique is that you actually care about the 2 main characters.

An instant classic about the story of the real-life Donnie Brasco who in actuality played a massive role in the breaking up of New York crime families

While this may look like just another crime movie with Al Pacino in it, it actually has advantages over other similar movies. The first is the degree of emotion involved and the engagement with the generally overlooked side effects of mob life. The second is Johnny Depp's ability to prove he could get to the level of Pacino and star next to him in a movie of this genre. The third is that Donnie Brosco is based on a true story. The fourth is its ability to keep the viewer's eyes on screen despite its relatively long running time, although it could've been slightly shorter (but either way it doesn't get boring). These advantages make up for the slow pacing and the somewhat trite plot, which in a way still resonates with the portrayal of the banalities of life. This means that the script and dialogue are good, but the overall result may not be memorable or leave a long-lasting impression like Heat or Serpico, for example. But that's what makes the Mike Newell movie unique in its own way.

Solid mafia movie. Can’t root for a snitch though. What was up with those punch sound effects?

This film is watchable because of the excellent performance of the actors. Not sure about the direction and screenplay.

Amazing cast with great acting from Depp and Pacino. Based on true events, this film draws you in and has you on the edge of your seat. One of the best movies I have seen in a long time.

Johnny Depp plays Joseph Pistone, undercover FBI agent known to the mob as Donnie Brasco. He befriends an old mobster named Lefty, played by Al Pacino who vouches for him to the higher ups. Based on true events, this is a pretty great mafia movie with Pacino and Depp putting on incredible performances. Michael Madsen is also great in a supporting role. I love true crime movies as well as anything to do with the mafia. Always find those movies riveting. This is one of the great ones.

A good mafia thriller... Pacino, Deep, and Madsen is a sure bet.

Based on the book Donnie Brasco: My Undercover Life in the Mafia by Joseph D. Pistone and Richard Woodley, this movie loosely tells the story of Pistone (Johnny Depp), an FBI undercover agent who infiltrated the Bonanno crime family under the alias Donnie Brasco by gaining the trust of aging hitman Lefty Ruggiero (Al Pacino). The intriguing thing about the movie is that as Pistone/Donnie disappears into the world of crime, he wonders if he's even a federal agent any longer. He also realizes that his actions will cause the death of Ruggiero, a man who he has come to consider a friend. By the end, the Donnie Brasco operation got the law over 200 indictments and 100 convictions. Today, Pistone lives with his wife under an assumed name in an undisclosed location — with a $500,000 open contract for his death — and continues to consult for the government and Hollywood. While Lefty takes off his jewelry and tells his wife, "If it was going to be anyone, I'm glad it was him," the real life Lefty was arrested by the FBI on the way to his own murder. He was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder, extortion, distribution of a controlled dangerous substance and running an illegal gambling operation. He received early parole in 1992 after he was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and died in 1994. It's wild that a gangster movie was directed by the same man who made Four Weddings and a Funeral, Mike Newell. The script was written by Paul Attansio, who also wrote Sphere, Disclosure, The Sum of All Fear, Quiz Show and The Good German.

aww this was so good; i did find it a bit unbelievable at how quickly Pacino's character took in Depp's character, but the ending really got me. what a likable, unlikely story.

Raw and memorable. This movie tells its gripping well-crafted story with verisimilitude and great character study. Top notch performances from Jonny Depp and Al Pacino, and one should appreciate the violence and language adding to the realism of the movie, that wouldn't fly in the presence of the political correctness in the 2020s.
