Donnie Darko is deservedly a cult film that combines psychological thriller, sci-fi and coming-of-age in a unique way. Jake Gyllenhaal's performance as Donnie is outstanding and carries the movie with a mixture of fragility and intensity. The atmosphere of the film is dark and surreal, and Richard Kelly succeeds in masterfully staging the psychological complexity. However, the movie does feel a little pretentious in places and drags in its self-reflective depth at times. Nevertheless, Donnie Darko remains a fascinating, distinctive work that can be interpreted in many different ways and resonates long after the credits have rolled.
