J. R. Jones Chicago Reader Joaquin Phoenix gives a rollicking performance as Callahan. Mar 11, 2020 Full Review Molly Haskell Film Comment Magazine If Phoenix doesn't generate much humor, he also acts as an astringent against the potent sentimentality of Callahan's Saul-to-Paul transformation and pilgrimage of apology, underlined by a heart-tugging Danny Elfman score. Dave C John Callahan wasn't really in my sphere of reference until coming across this biographical drama. JP is absolutely incredible in his role as Callahan, and really delivers believable addictive and self-destructive behaviours, whilst also bringing delightful dark shades of levity Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/06/24 Full Review Ashley H I did get quite bored throughout the film. Shows us a lot about dealing with self anxiety and alcoholic, which was realistic. But not entertaining enough if you don't actually know John Callahan. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/30/23 Full Review
