The Doors Reviews

Apr 17, 2025

While I thought Val Kilmer did a great job with the material with which he was working, that material, written by Oliver Stone, was high on sensationalism and low on facts. The rampant sex, drugs, and chaos did occur around Jim Morrison, but there was a lot more to him than what was portrayed in the film. I started wondering about this about halfway through the film and after researching it found that the story that was being told was pretty much bereft of the humanity that Morrison had. There were calm periods, more normal periods, low-key times, but none of this was shown in the film, or I should say, it was hardly shown. And they portrayed Pam as someone who felt jealousy and was enraged at Jim for his sexual encounters, but that was untrue as well. They were in an open relationship and she had other men, just like he had multiple women. Sadly she followed him in ODing a few years later. It's more of a sad story than a chaotic one, and should be depicted with a bit more humanity.

Val Kilmer ofrece una actuación destacada, aportando profundidad y carisma a su personaje. La película resulta entretenida, manteniendo el interés del espectador a lo largo de la trama.

Terrible parody of a legendary band. Over the top and silly. Morrison is conveyed as a one dimensional cartoon character. Very bad representation that real Doors fans reject.

Really good movie i’m a big doos fan you kind of forget the actor is just an actor playing Jim Morrison A lot of dedication and good ideas put into the movie not afraid to shy away from Jim Morrison’s ““ ugly side

One of the best films ever made. Since I first saw it 20 years ago I was instantly obsessed with Val, Jim, the Doors and the entire music era. No matter how many times I rewatch this it’s never enough

An entertaining film. Like most films it’s exaggerated in parts but worth watching just to enjoy a career best performance from Val Kilmer who nails Jim Morrison. Lots of criticism about actual events and people but sit back and enjoy the show. If nothing else the songs are top drawer! 5/5

Horrible acting and feels like a home movie

Val Kilmer an amazing actor killed it as Jim Morrison, I think that’s the most obvious thing to say, but Stone was trying to make a movie about Jim’s life and the doors but don’t think he did very well depicting it. A lot of what happens is made up and Stone ignores real life stories and statements from close friends of Morrison and doesn’t imply it in the movie. Val Kilmer does an excellent job playing a drunk guy in leather pants reciting poetry lines like an asshole. Just no way anyone can call that person Jim Morrison. The casting was really good too. I wish the movie was longer and could show Jim Morrison IN Paris and the days leading up to his death and the aftermath of it. Also, not one single soul was said to have been naked on stage while the Doors were performing, don’t know why that’s on there. Anyways do recommend the movie, the whole thing is a trip especially the warhool party scene.

I’ve never been the biggest fan of The Doors, and by extension, it’s legendary frontman Jim Morrison. Aside from Light My Fire, the song I’m most familiar with is The End, since it appears at the beginning of Apocalypse Now, one of my all-time favourite films. As a result, the Oliver Stone biopic was never really a film I was aching to see. Trying to capture the spirit of one of the 20th centuries most enigmatic figures is hard enough, but also doing justice to the bands work makes it an even more daunting challenge. From all that I’ve read, the film plays very fast and loose with its depiction of Morrison’s personality and relationships with those around him. Obviously artistic licence needs to be taken on some occasions, but the decision to depict him in the way they did is just baffling. If you knew nothing about Jim Morrison, you’d come out of this film thinking he was little more than a callous, self-aggrandising junkie who obsessed about dying so much that he never even really cared about living. You never get a real sense of who he was as a person, just caricaturish exaggerations of all the typical rock star cliches we’ve long grown tired of. The other Doors members are so marginalised and poorly represented that they pretty much all disowned it, and the end result is a film that seems to have been made by someone who hated Morrison and everything he stood for, wanting others to despise him too. The films biggest strength, as many have observed, is Val Kilmer’s performance. He truly disappears into the role, with energetic stage performances, a poetic mind and a truly generational talent for song writing. It’s a shame that a turn like this was part of a film that really didn’t deserve it, but it helps to elevate a frequently muddled and outright unpleasant film at times.

Val Kilmer should have received an Oscar for his role. 👏 Amazing

Incredible transformative performance by Val Kilmer. One of the best music biopics.

Val embodied Jim and his performance is really convincing. Look alike.

The performances are great. The movie itself is not.

The Doors offers a captivating glimpse into the rise and fall of one of rock's most iconic bands. Val Kilmer's portrayal of Jim Morrison is very authentic and it captures the enigmatic allure and self-destructive tendencies of the legendary frontman. Oliver Stone's direction immerses viewers in the psychedelic '60s era, with a soundtrack that pulsates with the band's electrifying energy. While the film may not delve deep into the complexities of Morrison's psyche, it still remains a visually stunning and musically rich tribute.

Val Kilmer's performance and the recreation of The Doors in concert are the redeeming elements in this otherwise torturous and quite frankly laughable biopic. Kilmer embodies the role he was born to play, and gives an incredible performance. As for the remainder of the 'film' ? credit has to go to my teenage son who compared a lot of the behind the scenes material to the fantasy sequences from 'Wayne's World.' Clumsy and pantomime-esque. The overt and 'on the nose' use of Doors music from the very outset gave it the feel of a fan remake devoid of any film making subtlety, art or insight. Bad wigs, wooden cut-out, or at the least marginalised, support cast place Kilmer centre stage, leaving the audience feeling as though they've watched a 'best of' compilation on YouTube, rather than gaining some insight into 'the real story of The Doors.' I've often defended Oliver Stone against nay-sayers, extolling the power of Platoon and JFK, while putting Natural Born Killers down as a mere aberration (all be it it from an excellent $1 Tarantino script); but The Doors has convinced me that merely 'being there' does not qualify Stone as a great film maker. I'm afraid, Mr Stone, the mythologised shaman, pretentious and self-loathing Jay Gatz-light, is you. The story of The Doors is perhaps, by turn, simply not that interesting. Like Oliver Stone, I too loved the myth surrounding The Doors, Jim Morrison and his untimely death, but then I turned 18.

Val Kilmer was fantastic as Jim Morrison, he really carry this film to greatness. The music of course was well but perticularly I like the honesty about it. As in those days many people knew that rockers used drugs for some of their lyrics and I like that it was included in this and not shun over. Overall as biofilms are concern this is right up there with one of the best ever made, that even J. Morrison would not be too happy of how accurate it is.

not accurate at all but very entertaining

After 1-hour, I knew I would not learn anything more about Jim as a person. Val Kilmer did an outstanding job in every way but he could not save this movie.

All around horrible disturbing movie that would make a stranger to the real Doors not want to see them at all.

Val Kilmer absolutely sells it! Meg Ryan should also get more credit for her work on this. Easily could have cut out around 30min but it's still a very well done film.
