Draft Day Reviews

Apr 11, 2025

Pretty lame movie, and yet somehow I wanted to finish it. It seems like whoever wrote it wanted it to be a gritty, "Ballers" realistic style movie with hard nosed businessmen trading in flesh for high stakes under the biggest spotlight, but it ended up feeling like a VERY PG-13 compromise. I guess that was necessary if it were to be done with a Roger Goodell cameo and the NFL's blessing. It's also a touch off-putting to see Jennifer Garner's by this time increasingly "worked on" face struggling to emote. The whole thing felt like a bowling game with bumpers on.

Chemistry between Costner and Jennifer Garner was non-existent, lots of cheesy moments with humor falling flat, and the stakes felt inflated.

Sure, it's unrealistic, but it's a damn fun movie to watch if you're a sports fan. I would've given it 4 stars, but P Diddy is in it.

As a football fan and someone who loves pro sports draft days, I have to say this film was a lot of fun. It did a great job capturing the twists, turns, and overall vibe of a real draft day. **Spoilers below** That said, the NFL fan in me couldn’t help but cringe at some of the decisions made by these managers. Trading everything for the first pick, only to draft a player who was considered a middle-rounder on draft day? And then there’s the Seahawks (in the movie), who land three first-round picks in exchange for the top pick, only to trade them all back to the same team—and had to throw in another player—when that hyped prospect, Bo Callahan, was dropping so much? It just doesn’t add up. Callahan's value was tanking hard, and especially knowing Cleveland didn’t want him (if they did, they would have taken him at #1), the Seahawks should’ve had all the leverage. (And asking for a kick returner in the deal as if that’s some sort of blue-chip asset?) I can’t see any GM making such a dumb move just because the fans are grumpy. The logic is definitely off. That said, it was still fun, intriguing, and the acting was great.

Surprisingly gripping for someone who not only does not follow American Football but who has never seen a game played. Costner bounces from problem to problem in both his personal and work life; the film deals with his search for solutions and he ends up pleasing everyone - even himself. Fade to satisfaction.

Take it for for what it is...it's entertaining. It's a popcorn movie...don't take it seriously. Agree it is ridiculous and unbelievable....it's a movie and what it does well is excite and entertain. It does a good job doing that and worth a watch.

Who knew that Ivan Reitman could step out of comedy? Brilliant film that brings the human element to people we easily boo, hiss and call for them to lose their jobs at the drop of a hat. Kevin Cosner is brilliant and loved the seeing the late great Chadwick Boseman

It's so bad! The ending was so ridiculous. Now that RT has disabled the ability to see what Individual scores are, I will tell you... "One star"

Something tells me Kevin Costner had a ton of say when it came to producing this thing. Painfully desperate to throw every cliche line and sports trope as if their lives depended on it. Horribly unrealistic if you've watched the NFL for more than a year....it's more of a fairy tale crammed in with predictable moves and corny lines.

Nice movie about the 1st Pick of the Draft in the first Round of the NFL teams. But what happened with the 2nd. Round, 3rd. Round, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th? They didn't choose no more players? 🤔

I do not understand the world of football AT ALL. Although I admire the sport from afar, it is not my thing. After hearing about this movie from a podcast, here in 2024, I decided to give it a shot because Tom Welling is in it. HOLY MOLY, sports fans! I laughed, I cried, I was on the edge of my seat. I knew nothing about Draft Day or what went into it. This is the power of great storytelling. Ivan and this brilliant cast made me care about something and people that did not exist before I pressed play. The comic book style way of filming was amazing and I wished more directors used this technique. I loved this film and am always in awe when directors, writers and actors can make me feel something that on paper I should not have cared about. Please watch!

I enjoyed this movie. The portrayal of draft day deal may have ben exaggerated, I have no way to know, but I found it intriguing and the acting was top notch. I can see how it could disappoint sports fans who love on the field action but I thought it was an interesting story. It had a bit of a twist ending with some heartwarming results. Something that is probably rare in the real draft day. There are so many empty movies today that just rely on special effects, machine guns and are thin on plot that I found this refreshing.

I was somewhat engaged for most of the movie but the ending was very hard to decifer I'm sure you can find something better to watch

I can't explain it but I love this movie! It's far from perfect but Costner is just damn good.

Pretty good movie about a sports general manager I found it very entertaining.

A stoic general manager of the Cleveland Browns refuses to be a team player nor listen to the advice of any of his coworkers. But he stays true to his goal, silently without revealing any of his genius ideas to anyone, and he prevails and wins in the end. He even managed to impregnate a much younger coworker to the delight of his grieving mother. A seriously predictable and basic movie with a boring performance by Kevin Costner and a script that's worth the price of a used Samuel French play.

Draft Day is such a interesting movie. Some of the shots and directed and edited in strange ways during phone call scenes. The story is kind of weird with its sub plots about Sonny's father and pregnant girlfriend, but when it focuses on the NFL draft, this movie is epic. The trading scene with Seattle at the end is actually one of the most badass scenes ever. Overall, a solid film that shows what some people are willing to do to change their life forever. Some kids in the draft are willing to lie, and others want to make their loved ones happy. A nice, lighthearted football movie is always great. 6/10

I'm an NFL fan and that was the dumbest movie ever.

I am generally not a fan of Costner's (he always gives me the impression of a snubb, that is too bored to act/play, or rather too good be doing this for the XYZ movie), but in this one he delivers the goods. Excellent movie for anyone interested in the Drafts

The only realistic part about the movie is that only the browns would make those types of boneheaded trades and then pick players at those postions.
