Drive-Away Dolls Reviews
The Coen Brothers quirks that once were so exciting have become part of the culture’s background noise. Mostly fun but sometimes frustrating to watch.
*Drive-Away Dolls* has all the right ingredients — a quirky, Coen-flavored premise, a stacked cast, and moments of sharp, oddball humor. It *should* be a ride worth remembering, but somewhere along the highway, it runs out of gas. The love story’s as predictable as a GPS route, and the characters never quite shift out of first gear. Sure, it’s fun in bursts and the style’s got that signature charm, but the whole thing feels more like a scenic detour than a destination. I wanted to love this one — I settled for “it’s fine.” Forgettable, but not regrettable. 2.5 stars.
A collaboration between Ethan Coen and his wife Tricia Cooke, Drive-Away Dolls is the story of lesbian friends Jamie (Margaret Qualley) and Marian (Geraldine Viswanathan), who embark on a road trip to deliver a car to Tallahassee, Florida, unaware that they are being followed by criminals who are trying to retrieve contraband from the trunk of the vehicle. It’s an appealing enough story of naïve innocents in over their heads, a sort of hybrid of the Coens’ The Ladykillers and Burn After Reading, with a few solid laughs, some interesting secondary characters, and an implausible but strangely intriguing storyline. Where the movie falters is with the protagonists – Qualley plays an annoying character straight out of The Dukes of Hazzard while Viswanathan’s character seems to be pulled directly from The Big Bang Theory. And not to niggle, but some of the transitions from scene to scene tend to be distracting and pointless. Other than that, it’s passable entertainment and not much more.
That feeling when the film is so impressed with its own humour and so high on its own energy that it completely forgets it’s supposed to have a plot until the 40-minute mark.
Drive Away Dolls Echt seltsam.
A screwball comedy that worth a watch.
As a straight feller who does not consume lesbian content, I actually found the film to capture a beautiful, and hot relationship between two young women who relish in their friendship, and find loving signs within that friendship. It also brought some comedy, and the movie in general was pretty funny. The old school style of the movie, sort of a mix of David Lynch, and obviously Cohens, it's a nice change of pace from your avarerage movie. It's not the most interesting plot, nor the funniest despite some very funny moments. I love road trips, so I liked this more than most, and as I said, the style is great. The relationship is authentic. I liked the movie, just not a must watch. Fun ending, I'll say.. Thank you.
Fairly entertaining with a small amount of charm.
Allright movie. Funny moments. It has the dry Coen brothers humour. Rather watch this than some random series on netflix but nothing more than that. I like the psychedelic visuals with Miley Cyrus.
Regressive ideas of queerness, an annoyingly terrible fake accent, and overall just a hard to watch attempt at cutesy-smart film. It's always brutal when movies are so proud of themselves from the get-go, and this movie thinks it's f'ing brilliant.
This flick has a lot of unrealized potential. The plot is borrowed from “No Country For Old Men”. — innocent bystander finds a suitcase that belongs to a criminal who then tracks them down. But the movie focuses more on the two young lesbian protagonists — one shy and reluctant — and the development of their relationship. The climax of the film seems like it was written in a hurry, without any surprise twists. And unlike “No Country,” the value of the suitcase to the owner doesn’t make much sense. This movie should be reworked to improve it.
It's hilarious and fun, it accurately portrays the mood of the sapphic world of the late 90s and the chemistry between the protagonists is an added spice. Also noteworthy are the cameos of Pedro Pascal, Miley Cyrus and Matt Damon in funny and unlikely roles.
Why don't the Coens work together again? This tried to be a Coen film, but instead it looks like a bad copy
Weird and wild. A trippy road movie with quick quips and memorable vibes,
D- gross and shallow. will never get back the time i wasted watching this absolute crap.
Disappointing is an understatement. Raunchy subject matter is not the problem. Making it funny or interesting...that seems to be a big problem for this film.
The cast makes greatly up for some flaws in the story which does not offer too many twists. Nevertheless the rythm is good, the chemistry of the two main characters works well and some of the dialogues are big fun. All in all it is definitely worthwhile watching.
If you've ever wondered what a Cohen Bros film would be like without Joel, well, no need to imagine anymore, it's bad. Margaret Qualley's accent was a little over the top, which is not unusual for a Cohen Bros film (Fargo being the obvious one), but her fried green tomatoes accent grated as the film puttered along to nowhere in particular. Atypical for a Cohen Bros film, the story lacked a solid villain and the motivation for chasing after the two female leads was supposed to be funny (I think), but was mostly cringe. The end is so silly and pointless, it's a wonder this script was greenlit at all. If you had a choice to drive away, walk, or run from this film, I'd choose to run-- that way you don't waste any gasoline.
Not the best Coen film. It still has a unique story and quirky dialogue. It’s a quick entertaining movie.
The lead actresses are funny and it's somewhat entertaining, but it's not as good as the Coen Brothers at their best. Ultimately it's just pretty disappointing.
