The Edge of Love Reviews

Mar 17, 2025

I can see why certain people don't like this movie - for it to be good you'll need to understand the depth of the story. Keira and Cillian are most definitely a duo worth watching.

I'm so glad I didn't let the reviews sway me. I watched this 2x back to back. Amazing cast and beautiful story line. It's going on my top 20!

I hate this movie. Everyone is bad, stupid, arrogant, dumb, mad etc

Thanks for nothing. One star for Cillian Murphy only

I actually really enjoyed this movie. It has a strong cast and you can see some depth in Murphy's character and knightley's. I do think Dylan came off a bit shallow and wasn't very entertaining. But I definitely think the move was enjoyable.

The power of the actors is stronger than the story.

Sappy and really stupid.

It was alright. I did not feel at the edge of my seat and my husband shared similar sentiments. I wish they developed the characters more so before diving into the plot. I would be fine not watching this..

Oh, my god, what is this film? Is it social drama? Is it a war drama? Is it a romantic drama or biographical film? What is it?? The film tries to cover so many different themes, it begins to confuse itself soon enough. It has a strong beginning, but half-way through it becomes overly sentimental and Keira Knightley turns to her usual acting of pining and pouty lips. Sheeh. I thought I was going to see a Dylan Thomas focused film, but all I got is barely audible/recognisable Welsh accents and naive storytelling.

makes a point ... does this subtly ... the way it's filmed and directed is marvellous ... requires patience so not really for those exclusively rambo.

Well I see the North American audience and the critics did not like this film. I'm not sure what people were expecting. I enjoyed it. Everyone smoked like chimneys in that era...what a different world we live in now!

Beautiful at times with some good performances and nice ideas but the key relationships and events in this movie never fully feel explained or believable: I am a bit fan of 'show' not 'tell' but at times I feel like neither are really happening and things just occur before your eyes that don't mean anything. At the end of the film I felt I had enjoyed the experience yet I also felt fairly empty.

With a narrative that lacks focus and awkwardly misplaced dialogue, this romance rivalry flick tends to become frustrating, despite its devoted performances.

Some parts of this movie were good others a bit patchy

A serious drama that will leave many struggling to take anyone involved with it too seriously. It had the potential to be a very interesting film but actually ends up being a dull affair that I'm already starting to forget only an hour or so after watching it. How did it actually end again?

Almost overwhelmingly depressing film sorely lacking in actual love or romance. Messed up people with messed up lives. However, it is a "classy" picture as I called it before seeing and there's some great cinematography work, but the heart and soul of the film just isn't powerful enough. And Cillian Murphy just isn't in it enough! ;D Before Seeing: The movie that nearly crippled "Brothers & Sisters"! Thanks a lot, Miller!!! >:(

I thought the story was kind of weird. However, the actors' performances were great. Keira Knightley, Sienna Miller and Cillian Murphy all had emotional performances.

the powerful performances of knightly and miller were at their best but that dont mean that the movie was interesting

A visually striking film about the poet Dylan Thomas and the two women in his life. One is his feisty wife Caitlin (Sienna Miller) and the other is his childhood friend Vera (Keira Knightley). Vera makes a stunning entrance as the camera zooms in on her as she is singing a song for the underground to support the troops during wartime. It's a bold colorful image that will be with the entire movie. This movie is only good for the acting, more on that in a minute. The main plotline has Dylan (Matthew Rhys) struggling over which woman to be with and they even end up sharing a house together for about a year. That is until Vera meets and falls in love with a soldier named William (Cillian Murphy). Surprisingly Vera and Caitlin develop a bond of friendship that is put through the wringer. Love is a gorgeous looking film with solid performances with Murphy and Miller being the standouts. Keira is ok, but she can do these kind of roles in her sleep now. I wish she would change gears and do a romantic comedy like Love Actually or an action film instead of these period English films. Sienna Miller actually upstages her with a super performance as the hellion wife Caitlin. Never before had I seen Ms. Miller show this much range as an actress. But my main problem with this movie is the central character of Dylan himself. I just couldn't see why both women were this crazy or involved over him. He comes across as a douche bag. And I swear to god I had never seen this much smoking in any one film ever. I mean these people smoke when they drink, when they talk, when they cook, when they eat, when they lay in bed cuddling. Every scene has someone lighting up. Still, this film is worth seeing mainly for the acting. And some good singing by Keira, if that is her doing her own singing, it's pretty good. Watch with low expectations.

<i>''First love is alright as far as it goes, last love that's what I'm interested in.'' </i> Two feisty, free-spirited women are connected by the brilliant, charismatic poet who loves them both. <b>Keira Knightley</b>: Vera Phillips <b>Sienna Miller</b>: Caitlin MacNamara <i>The Edge Of Love</i> obviously is a drama set in the mist of World War 2 in London and the beautiful Welsch Countryside. You could say <i>Edge of Love</i> is in the same style of <i>Atonement</i>. I found it hugely amusing that Keira Kinghtley now has a love interest in the guise of Irish actor Cillian Murphy's William Killick, whereas in <i>Atonement</i> it was Scottish James McAvoy. <div style="width:482px;"><a href="http://www.flixster.com/photos/the-edge-of-love2008-cillian-and-keira-in-edge-of-love---ucillian-news---lilianettys-idol-11018088"><img src="http://content6.flixster.com/photo/11/01/80/11018088_gal.jpg" border="0"/></a><div style="text-align:center;font-size:10px;"></div></div> Anyway back to <i>Edge of Love</i> and the scenario that comes into light. We have Dylan Thomas played by Matthew Rhys who I don't recollect seeing before, we have his wife Caitlin portrayed by Sienna Miller then we have Keira Knightley who is Vera Phillips a childhood flame from Dylan's past. Let's face it the plot isn't exactly original we have all seen films which give us a love triangle scenario. But <i>Edge of Love</i> does it in a way that makes the journey compelling to watch. Into this trio's life quite soon emerges William Killick, who is played by Cillian Murphy as I mentioned, who falls for Vera and becomes involved with her having the obvious advantage over Dylan in the fact he is unmarried. What transpires is a drama that involves William going off to war only for Dylan and Vera to have a rekindling of their childhood love. <i>Edge of Love</i> is a WW2 drama piece that shows electrifying performances from all players. Whether it be Sienna Miller's out going do what she likes Caitlin or Keira's faceted dimensional Vera it's wonderfully depicted. <i>Edge of Love</i> also shows a friendship between these two and a bond that in essence shows the delicate intricacies of the female and their reaction toward each other. The chemistry I felt was stronger even than that of Cillian Murphy & Keira especially the last scenes where the two leads totally grasp emotion and flair not just in their words but in their eyes too which to me is and was beautiful. Dylan was a character who was interesting but I tended to dislike for the movie due to his surprisingly selfish choices and arrogant ways. Misusing his poet skills for a cowardly way out of War and ending up with no money or determination to do the right thing even in a grueling court case in which he should of not done what he did. Cillian Murphy also has some powerful scenes near the latter part of how the War has effected him and how if pushed, how easy it is to just snap and be forced into violent and retaliative action. Keira and Sienna also pull off and attempt to muster Welsh accents which was very amusing to hear them do. In my opinion Keira had a more profound performance and beauty due to her stylized, colourful life depicted of her in the Underground singing for the people as the bombs are being dropped above. The costumes, uses of footage back in the day, locations, the casual, frequent smoking by all the characters and the effective props all help capture the feel and quality of the period. <i>Edge of Love</i> gives us a story that really shows an array of people and how their lives are ultimately effected by one another, in this regard it succeeds in it's detailed emotional study of love, loss and newfound aspects of life.
