Eliza Graves Reviews

Oct 4, 2024

Tows a dull line: neither a suspenseful horror/thriller or a cheesy camp romp. A lot of well known actors in a poor pantomime. No message, no laugh, not even a proper cringe. What the filmmakers’ intentions were, we cannot ascertain.

Great movie, with story, suspense, secrets, twists and a surprise ending.

A beautiful, intense, and heartwarming and fantastical period drama about a small world that has been turned upside down. The movie does a fantastic job of showing the complexity of the characters, revealing the good and evil qualities in both the caretakers and the patients of Stonehearst Asylum. This gripping story gradually reveals many twists along the way that unfold during the story's telling, the best of which can be found right at the end. Highly recommend.

I liked the movie... I just don't like the fact that I can imagine this exact same story being elevated to even greater artistry. In the hands of a more capable director and storyteller with a better lead actor, this could have been Shutter Island. It could have been weightier. I thought the whole premise was great. There were no good or bad characters (at least the main characters). They were all a mix of good and bad. They all had good points. They all served a purpose in illuminating the problem. The film just couldn't help but to veer off to the commercial side, though. It could have explored more themes of mental health, sociopathy, dehumanization of institutions, etc. It was all there. And it missed. But just barely. I understood the themes, but I wanted the film to cut deeper.

Stonehearst Asylum had the ingredients to be a great movie, but in the end it settled for just ok. Good cast, Kate Beckinsale, set in an asylum - how could this not be awesome? The story just did not have enough to be scary or mysterious. Ok to pass the time, but there are many other better movies out there.

This is a fairly haunting and atmospheric watch at times, with it being set in a large and dour building. It is a period drama set in the late 1890s and indeed there are some fancy costumes and uniforms on show. The plot itself I thought was interesting - I wondered what truths might be discovered. I also thought that Ben Kingsley gave one of the better performances, being quite sinister in his role as Silas. I wouldn't say its scary but its reasonably spooky and so I would recommend it, yes but not as a horror film, rather more a drama, perhaps with thriller elements.

really similar to shutter island! recommend

Despite a good cast and an atmospheric score by John Debney (Everyone's Hero, Malibu's Most Wanted) it's a mediocre horror movie

Poe's work comes to the screen with a pretty slow start, but holds its own as crazy falls for crazy falls for crazy. Beckinsale is the psycho damsel that doesn't get the back story she deserves to make this flick work the way it could.

Good watch, not going to go down as a classic movie, all main cast portrayed their characters well.

Overall I loved the movie. I found it very interesting and it captivated me thorough out the whole thing, wondering what would happen next. Would definitely recommend.

It was better than I expected, since I don't particularly like historical horror films or horror movies set far back in the past, but it was decent. The character development could've been improved, but the acting was outstanding. At first, the plot seemed completely ridiculous, but it got better, and maybe I would have enjoyed this film better if it wasn't for the terrible ending you didn't see coming but when you find out you feel like you should've seen it even before the start of the movie without knowing anything about it. The twist it took at the end has been done so many times before but overall, this film worked nice as a small 1800's set horror movie with less scares and more intriguing atmosphere

"No one is what they seem" It has a good plot & really good cast, but needed to push the fear factor higher. It does do a really great job of showing ‘victorian medicine experiments' and the finale twist is actually pretty good.

Personally, I really enjoyed this film and thought it fun, exciting with some good plot twists. An adaption of the old adage about "the inmates running the asylum" this one is quite clever. Being a huge Kate Beckinsale fan made this more enjoyable. And the huge and foreboding mist enshrouded asylum is something else. Ben Kingsley is superb in his role as head of the asylum. A fine actor, he could take any role and make it plum. And finally, a surprising love story.

Not too bad, not too good, perfectly average thriller.

i didn't think this was that bad... i may have missed a bit in the middle there so i didn't know what was going on for a while, but i enjoyed all the twists & turns at the end.

Not a single dialogue in this movie is irrelevant or useless. There's always something happening with each scene and you'll be deeply immersed and fascinated by this movie. If you're recommended this movie by someone, the first thing that might come to your mind would be shutter island; after watching it, I assure you it's entirely different. Another thing is that the ending will not disappoint you.

I really, really hate it when they do the 'someone survives when it should be impossile to be able to' cheats. You get rid of one turd and they seemily rise from the dead. I find it silly. I believe the film maker thinks it adds to the suspense but it only adds to my scepticism and irritation. To me it weakens the film and the ending. And to continue the silliness until its ultimate conclusion my name is Quinton Hogg.

Someone surely should have rejected the script, or at the very least reworked it so that its predictable twists and turns were removed and replaced with something original. If you can't guess the plot within five minutes, there's no hope for you. The film treads water for almost its entire running time and wastes some good actors.
